Romance intertwines with ghosts, cults, and karmic justice

Again, Rachael was caught off guard. She spun around to face a woman with golden red hair streaked with gray and white. Her face was lined yet appeared vibrant, as was her whole stature. She was slender and strong; her posture carried no signs of the age that her face and hair implied.
"Who are you?" Rachael turned to meet her squarely. "How is it that you appear outside the sacred circle?"
Her arms gracefully spread. "This is-was my home. I could not leave until another had come to be its guardian."
"You’re Kevin’s Grandmother?"
She nodded. "You may call me Grandmother if you wish."
"No. Thank you."
"As you wish. Then Sarah. That is what I was called before I died." She pointed to the kettle. "Your water is nearly ready and my time is short."
"Are you looking for justice?"
Again, she nodded. "That and more.’

Not For Ourselves is a robust novel that spans lifetimes in the most unique way possible by weaving a tale of revolving reincarnation.

Not For Ourselves
A Book Review
By Cate Cavanagh

Theresa Chaze has once again proven herself to be a premier Wiccan author of amazing skill and creativity! Not For Ourselves is a robust novel that spans lifetimes in the most unique way possible by weaving a tale of revolving reincarnation.

Readers knowledgeable of the Craft will find this approach familiar yet refreshing in depiction as we witness the flashing back and forth of a character in the present reliving moments of a previous life whose errors have followed her through many incarnations including the present.

Through Alyssa’s eyes we see how conflicted relationships are fast forwarded to the present as she comes to recognize antagonists of her past life tormenting her in the present. Alyssa’s biggest challenge is to rejoin her past self and seek to correct the error that sent her span of lives into the condemnation of karmic debt.

A victim of stalking and terrorism by a local police officer Alyssa is forced to send her cats to live with her sister, Michelle. Reporting this officer (Nevel) is useless as the blue wall converges about him, rendering him protected against prosecution. As her torment continues week after week and month after month the result is the loss of her job as well what has become her fragile sanity. Despite this she fosters enough strength to vlog a diary of what is happening as well as publishing his threatening phone calls. When he and a fellow officer come to her house with false charges and threats, Alyssa finds her cause has been followed by the FBI for some time. Angry that they allowed her to live in constant fear she searches for a way to find peace again and to come away with her goddess given power once more!

Complicating matters is James, the FBI agent that rescues her and Wayne the attorney helping his father deliver hay to the reclaimed horse farm that Alyssa resumes on her path to recovery. But is Wayne in town to defend her tormentors?

So thorough is Theresa’s research she writes of how Alyssa houses an injured possum rather than have him free to roam the stable because its feces can cause serious, life threatening illness. As a horsewoman, I was very impressed with this authenticity.

Authentic as well as her description of projecting oneself into a past life and back again. Authentic as well is how she depicts the physical, mental, and emotional turmoil that rapid astral traveling can be. Those of us of the Craft have experienced this and it is very impressive that Theresa set before her the daunting challenge to recreate not just the physical sensations of trying to undo past errors but the very important tenets of the Wiccan path.

Upon completion of Not For Ourselves, those of the Craft will be sated knowing that someone like Theresa writes a true representation of this treasured belief system while opening a whole new realm of reading experience for the average reader.

Kudos to you Theresa Chaze! Well done!

Ghostly Karma

I'm updating the character descriptions for Never Can Say Good-bye.

The 40 something actress portraying the character of Lynne in the paranormal thriller Never Can Say Good-bye needs to walk a fine line of conscious knowledge and subconscious motivation. Lynne's soul also reincarnated very quickly. But unlike the others, she returned out of love and the need to help others heal. Although she has no conscious memories of the past life, it has influenced her relationships and led her to be a motivating force in the karmic balancing. Those she loved before were in torment, because of the lies they believed when they died. By gently guiding Elizabeth and Michael to forgiveness as well as supporting Amanda's healing process, she sets some of the wrongs back to right.

Never Can Say Good-bye is a paranormal feature that intertwines the past with the present to create an innovative spin on the ghostly genre.

Imprisoned in her family's home, the spirit of a murdered child waits for her parents to free her. But they have moved on to new lives as has her killer. Randi must bring them back together, so that they can forgive themselves and make amends. If she succeeds, they will all heal and she will be freed to also reincarnate. If she fails, their need for revenge will damn them all.

Intertwining the past and the present to create an innovative spin on the ghostly genre

Paranormal thriller with an innovate spin on the ghostly genre from Theresa Chaze on Vimeo.

Combining two concepts, Never Can Say Good-bye creates an innovative spin on the ghostly genre. With a tagline, “When love is forever, death is only the beginning,” it is comparable to Ghost and The Others.

Roy Sexton's Review of Never Can Say Good-bye

My my downright caustic review of the latest Transformers installment caught the attention of Traverse City-based independent filmmaker Theresa Chaze (click here for her website). She is also a published author, experienced video producer, and accomplished communications professional, and she is hard at work launching her new film Never Can Say Good-bye (IMDB page). I was honored when she asked if I would read her script and offer my thoughts.

(And the animal lover in me adores this part of her impressive bio: “As the media specialist for Angel Protectors of Animals and Wildlife, she produced several public service announcements and micro-documentaries. The messages remained informative and promoted positive action to save our nation’s wildlife.” Yes! Another of her potential projects is a TV show about equine therapy for veterans – Horses and Heroes.)

Never Can Say Good-bye reinvents the reincarnation conceit (Christopher Reeve’s/Jane Seymour’s 1980 film Somewhere in Time, Ellen Burstyn’s 1980 film Resurrection in the guise of gothic paranormal psychodrama (Nicole Kidman’s 2001 film The Others, Julie Harris’ 1963 film The Haunting, Deborah Kerr’s 1961 film The Innocents). The plot concerns two families united by a doomed marriage in the 1950s and explores the dissonant legacy that familial discord has had on subsequent generations. (See the Stephen King/John Mellencamp musical Ghost Brothers of Darkland County for another take on this thematic concept.)

I finished reading the script earlier this week. It is so well done and layered and clever. I love the notion of turning a ghost story on its head through the lens of reincarnation. I thought the characters were all clearly and thoughtfully drawn, and the script is definitely a page turner in the best sense. The disparate threads cohere in a denouement that is both chilling and poignant. The dialogue is believable, and the insular college-town setting (somewhere in northern Michigan, I believe) lends a nice chilly, hierarchical vibe.
Different actors are reported to have been attached at various points, including Lauren Holly, Bill Hayes, and Dyan Cannon. Stanley Livingston is connected to direct. Obviously, “name” performers would bring added attention to the project, but I daresay a cast of unknowns would keep audience attention focused on the narrative and the dense web of challenging relationships therein.

And, as in seemingly all creative efforts these days, there is a crowd-source funding campaign afoot through Indiegogo – you can donate here. From the campaign’s page …
We love a good ghost story. How about you? We are not talking about films that gross out the audience or are so dependent of special effects that the producers forgot to give the characters personalities or have plots that are based on clichés or simply don’t make any sense. Much like Dark Shadows, Never Can Say Good-bye is based on suspense and plot twists that will scare the socks off the audience and make them suspicious of the dust bunnies under their beds.

Best of luck, Theresa – hope this script makes it to the silver screen soon – it’s a keeper!

What Makes a Successful Film?

The main doctrine of a profitable business is to produce a quality product that consumers want at a cost effective price. Yet for many production studios, film distributors and investors there is a major disconnect with this concept. Not only have they failed to produce a product that consumers want, they are also not producing their product in a cost effective manor. Whereas technological advances in production and distribution equipment have lowered costs, while increasing quality, film budgets continue to skyrocket.

When choosing films to support studios, distributors and investors ask “whose in it?”, while the audience asks “what is the film about?”. The former believe A list talent insures the success of a project; therefore films without a hot actor on board have difficulty finding financing and distribution. Yet the box office has repeatedly proven this standard to be false. Which celebrity is hot and who is not quickly changes. They quickly become famous for one project, yet they just as quickly disappear. Talented actors—the ones who have learned their craft--maintain a standard of excellence that begins with smaller roles and develops into the body of work, which leads to more challenging roles.

True A listers do not magically appear through PR tricks or highly publicized bad behavior. They are created when the right actor is cast in the perfect role for her or him. It is the unique combination of the right person, the right role at the right time that launches an actor into stardom. The best example is Indiana Jones. Tom Selleck was the first choice for the role. He was the hottest male star at the time, but he was unavailable. Harrison Ford was cast. Most people would be hard pressed to imagine anyone else as Indiana Jones. Although Stars Wars launched Ford to stardom, it was Raiders of the Lost Ark, which made him box office gold. However, even with his strong fan base and his profitability track record, not even Ford could pull in an audience for Cowboys & Aliens. The storyline wasn't strong enough for the audience to suspend their disbelief enough to buy tickets.

Although many of the “A list” actors started in television, many distributors discount their profitability in the theatres. They refuse to see how far reaching and potentially profitable television actors can be. Popular television shows create a fan base not only for show, but also for the individual actors. Ratings translate not only into advertising dollars, but ticket sales as well. Television talent, which has yet to make the leap to film, is more cost effective. They have strong fan bases, yet their salary and perk requirements are usually not has high as their film equivalent. They are also used to working on tight production schedules, which also lowers costs. In addition, every episode of their show is free advertising for whatever film they appear.

Studios and distributors are responsible for the endless remakes and sequels. From their perspective, if it was successful once, it'll work again and again and again. Audiences are tired of reruns. They are looking for something new and the box office proves it. The success of Spider-man movies as well as few other films on the surface supports their theory. However, how much of the box office is not so much the audience being excited about particular film, but rather wanting to see a movie and choosing to see the lesser offensive film. The successful reruns are far out numbered by the mediocre remakes. Dark Shadows and Total Recall are just two in the latest remakes that haven't lived up to expectations. Ticket prices also contribute to the seemingly high box office numbers. By dividing the price of tickets sold into the grosses, the numbers prove that attendance is down.

Audiences are more loyal to genres than to cast, crew or production teams. Although there are hundreds of sci-fi, romance, horror, anime, etc conventions, there has yet to be one convention for an individual actor. Genre is a more reliable source of profitability. The Devil Inside is a perfect example. It is micro budget horror film with a 1 million budget. It was distributed Paramount Insurge. Opening weekend, it grossed 33 million dollars. By all accounts, it is a bad movie, yet it went on to gross over 101 million USD worldwide, because of the genre and it was new film. Many people have a favorite genre, which they will go see no matter who is starring in it or what others say about the film. These people are the target audience, whose word of mouth endorsements will bring in the general audiences faster than any marketing campaign.

Secondly the high production costs have limited the number of films the studios are producing each year and thereby reducing the number of films distributors have available to them. In the past, each studio produced hundreds of films a year, which spreads the financial risk factor among them thereby protecting the studio's bottonline. They were always looking for new projects and new talent in which to invest. However with the enormous budgets most new films, studios, producers and distributors have placed all their financial eggs in one or two baskets. The big budgeted films have to do extremely well otherwise the studio suffers a great financial loss. The break even point for a 100 million dollar film is much higher than for a 20 million dollar film. For that same 100 million, five films could be produced, giving the studio a five times higher chance of making a profit.

Big budgets are caused by A list casts, special effects, big egos and lack of pre-planning.
  • A list actors, directors, and producers simply cost more. A list actors cost millions of dollars, a percentage of the grosses and special “requests”, which could include anything from special food to having their entire family brought with them. The greater expense is justified by their increased profitability. The Tourist is a prime example of how this is not always true. It had two A list actors and barely made budget.
  • Technological advances have created more opportunities for special effects. But by focusing on the new effects, character and plot development have suffered. John Carter is the best example of what focusing on special effects at the expense plot and character really costs.
  • Big egos, poor planning and lack of flexibility combined together are the biggest waste of funds. For decades films were able to boasted about their ability to be innovative. They were the “MacGyvers” of the business world. They were experts at finding creative solutions to production challenges; that has changed. They would rather spend money like a drunken sailor on payday than think outside the box. Disney is remaking The Lone Ranger. Instead of leasing or bartering use of one of the existing western frontier towns, they are building a town. Why? Because someone on the team was unwilling be flexible with their vision of what the town should look like. There was another film that spend thousands of dollars in post production to change the color of a character's shirt. It would have been more cost effective just to make sure character had the right color shirt in the first place.

Technology had brought down both production and distribution costs. Digital video has eliminated the film stock and processing costs. Bulky production and editing equipment has been replaced with smaller high tech pieces that are easier to transport and are more cost effective. Theatrical distribution has replaced expensive 35 MM film prints with hard drives and electronic downloads, which has eliminated the most costly aspects and allowed simultaneous worldwide release, while eliminating most pre-release pirating.

Even with the massive budgets, film continues to be one of the United State's most profitable exports. It is one of the few industries that can't be outsourced. Films that do not make budget domestically find an eager audience abroad. However, theatrical release is only one source of income. DVD or electronic download followed by pay per view and network release increase the films revenue without adding to the production costs. The growing number of Internet and satellite entrainment networks has created an increasing demand for new television programming and films. These venues have a high demand for content and have the ability to pay for it.
The film industry is a business like no other; yet like every other business its success depends on their ability to provide a quality product that meets its customers' needs. There a no simple formula for a successful film. What people will like cannot be summed up on a balance sheet. Just because a film worked once, it doesn't guarantee that it will work again. Nor can relying too heavily on one element, whether it be star power, special effect or remaking a popular film, insure a film's profitability. However, if you give the people what they want they will come.

Never Can Say Good-bye: Paranormal Romance Without Vampires

Never Can Say Good-bye
When love and hate survive death
Theresa Chaze

Have you ever met someone for the first time and instantly liked or hated them? What if reincarnation was real and our reaction was a soul memory fighting its way into our conscious mind? What if our meeting again was not by coincidence, but by a ghostly intervention? Would we do things differently or would we make the same mistakes?

Elizabeth was asked by her mentor to teach a writing course at the small college. Since she never forgets a kindness, she reluctantly agrees. Arriving in town, she instantly regrets her decision. She wants to run, but she is honor bound to stay. Even as the ghost of a small child begs her to forgive, the memories of another time arouse feelings she doesn't understand and are unable to control. When she meets Shane, Elizabeth is overwhelmed with hatred. The feeling is mutual as Shane redirects her jealousy and rage from Lynne to Elizabeth. By the time Elizabeth realizes what is happening it is too late to run. Can she and the others learn how to forgive and remember the love before the jealousy, hatred and need for revenge once again take over their lives?

Never Can Say Good-bye” is a traditional ghost story with a reincarnation twist. It picks up where Somewhere in Time, Ghost and Always left off. Its tagline is love and hate survive death

Our motto at Cosmos Productions is "no guts, no glory". We tell original stories about people who are unique not because they have super powers, but because they have the courage to face life. We are innovative and original not only with plots and characters, but also in the way we find solutions to production challenges allows us to produce quality low budget projects.

Never Can Say Good-bye is a paranormal romance feature film, which picks up where Somewhere in Time, Always and Ghost left off in popularity and profitability. It is a traditional ghost story, which has a reincarnation twist. However, unlike many of the films in the genre, it lacks vampires, zombies and werewolves.

Never Can Say Good-bye is different because it is a film about people for people. We believe that quality involves more than sex, violence and special effects. It is innovative because it enables the whole family to enjoy the film together, instead of splitting off due to content. This film fills a void that has been created in the industry by being gender, ethnic and age inclusive. While other films target the 18-35 demographic, Never Can Say Good-bye will also play to the older audience, thereby giving them a reason to go back to the theatres.

Additionally, Never Can Say Good-bye will be popular and make a profit because it is the right time and the right message. People are questioning and looking for new answers. We are offering them hope, love, and a happy ending. When you emotionally engage the audience, they will come.

Awakening the Dragon: Book One of the Dragon Clan Trilogy
By Theresa Chase

Who is Rachael, and why has she come to Coyote Springs? In a town of bigotry and religious zealots, Rachael is opening the Dragon’s Den bookstore. Why at this particular time has Rachael and her cats come to Coyote Springs? What of the people at “The Farm”, as the town’s people refer to it, is there something that Rachael must do? She has more questions than answers as she begins life in Coyote Springs.

Out of town, lies a cottage that the towns’ folk want burned down, why do they want it destroyed? The owner and rather powerful person in town, Kevin, will not allow its destruction. He doesn’t want it destroyed and doesn’t want to rent it out, why? People are afraid to enter the cottage. When they enter, strange things begin to happen to them physically. No one can stay in the cottage for any length of time. Kevin even has trouble lasting in the cottage for more than a few minutes before he becomes ill.

Along comes Rachael, she talks to the previous owner who is dead and is welcomed into the cottage. Is this some supernatural ability, or is there really something within Rachael growing stronger, why Rachael, and not someone from Coyote Springs? Is there a mission for her to complete that Rachael is unaware of as to why her mentor sent her to this particular town?

Cheyenne from the farm is someone that the House of Christ is against along with Rachael Franklin. Is there a real reason or is just that the members of the House of Christ don’t like someone who is different and will not conform to what the reverend and followers believe people should think and believe.

This is only a small glimmer into the story in Awakening the Dragon. You will have to read the book to find out the intricacies of the story.

This reviewer awards a four star rating to Awakening the Dragon.

Dragon Domain: Book Two of the Dragon Clan Trilogy
By Theresa Chaze

In this book, Cheyenne and Celeste have a parting of the ways all because of the one known as Dominic. Celeste and Dominic steal from Cheyenne. More happens to darken the mood at the farm. Cheyenne must come up with money to pay the farm’s mortgage payments. She could lose the farm. Also in Dragon Domain are some old friends from Awakening the Dragon like Rachael Franklin, Kevin, Carmen, and others. There are also some new characters in Dragon Domain.

The new characters come to the aid of Cheyenne and those from the dark side. The House of Christ and its supporters are back again with their bigotry and narrow-mindedness. There are some truths that will come out, that are not been spoken of, and a few twists that no one might expect. While Dragon Domain is the continuing saga in the trilogy, it also has some new information and characters that add to the depth of the Dragon Clan Trilogy. Waiting for the third book isn’t easy. A recommendation is to find all three and read them in sequence.

What happens in the forest when the new characters end up not showing up when expected? Will things turn out as Cheyenne hopes, or will the dark one prevail? This is a story of light and dark, good and evil from a nonreligious point of view. It is from a belief system within the participants involved in the struggle and their determination and inner strengths.

The House of Christ is of little use, and is more of a hinderance, by not allowing things to run their course. There are more things that we are unaware of than things that we do understand in the world around us. Dragon Domain explores some of them. It is up to the reader to believe or not. The book is fiction, but is it really?

This reviewer awards a four star rating to Dragon Domain.

I do get to review the third book, don't I?

Never Can Say Good-bye: A Paranormal Romance

Never Can Say Good-bye
by
Theresa Chaze

Never Can Say Good-bye can be best described as a combination of What Dreams May Come and the Reincarnation of Peter Proud. It is a paranormal romance, which is set in northern Michigan.

At the turn of the century, the logging industry created millionaires and boomtowns; it also created intense rivalries and feuds. When Randolph Bellows scouts and claims a large track of land and the lumber on it for himself instead of his employer, James Ramsdell, he becomes an outcast in the community. Ignoring his status and her father’s disapproval, Sara James Ramsdell marries him; however, their happiness is short lived. Sara Jane dies during childbirth, yet her spirit remains trapped by the love bond she has with Randolph. Distraught, Randolph marries Audrey not out of love, but to have someone to care for his new born son, Randy. Even though he is very honest with her, Audrey falls in love with him and manipulates him into consummating their marriage. After Audrey becomes pregnant, Randolph feels honor bound to try to make the marriage work. They live as man and wife, yet he longs to join his soul mate. When Audrey’s jealous rages boil over onto Randy, he agrees to board up the bedroom, trapping Sara Jane‘s spirit inside. Soon after his Randy mysteriously dies.

Historian and author, Michael Scott follows his friend, Lynne Mason to Coyote Springs. His plan was to teach a term or two while doing research on the logging industry. Yet when he finds the old Bellow’s Mansion, his plans change. There is something about the house that calls to him. When he meets Randolph Bellow’s grand-daughter, he falls in love with her. In spite of her history of jealousy and instability, he marries her and. convinces the current owner of the mansion to allow them to move in. After researching the home, he finds the hidden bedroom. When he unseals it, he releases past that had been trapped for decades.

To help a friend, Elizabeth reluctantly agrees to teach a writing course at the Bellow‘s University. Although she finds Coyote Springs quaint, she immediately regrets her decision. She finds the town both haunting and alluring at the same time. However, it isn’t until after that she meets Michael that she becomes more determined than ever to find a reason to leave. Before she can find an excuse, she finds herself caught up in a lovers’ triangle that could very well mean her death.

Never Can Say Good-bye proves that when love turns to hate, it is best to say good-bye.
