Horses and Heroes: A documentary TV series for veterans

Horses and Heroes will take ten veterans, including two celebrities, on a healing adventure of self-discovery as they confront their ghosts and make peace with them.  The cast will be interacting with each other as well as the horses.  On the surface, it sounds ambiguous and exploitative. However, Horses and Heroes is solely about healing and new beginnings, not exploiting people’s pain to make a buck.  Which is why the series will never have a typical teaser reel.   It would be cruel to bring the team together to start the healing process, which will open their wounds and then tell them to just put a pin in it.

Military personnel and veterans have a language and awareness that is all their own. Vet-to-vet support brings veterans together to support each other as they confront their ghosts. They know the language.  They know the dodges.  They can see the distance growing in each other’s eyes and know how to pull the other back from the edge.  Tempers may flare.  Tears may fall, But the sisterhood and brotherhood that kept them safe will also bring them the rest of the way home.

That’s not to say that Horses and Heroes will be all sad sob stories.  On the contrary, they will be the exception, not the rule.  Snarkiness, dark humor, and practical jokes, especially between the different branches, open the door for “you ain't seen nothing yet”.  This makes the cast the Y factor.  Anyone who has ever worked with animals knows how unpredictable they can be.  Horses are even more so, which is why no matter how the production team pre-plans and organizes, the horses will always be the X-factor that will make things go sideways.

In this case, X plus Y will add up to a unique series that supports healing, positive forward movement, and new beginnings.  Japan has a specialized art form called Kintsugi, which means "golden joinery."  It is the process of repairing broken pottery by mixing powdered gold, silver, or platinum in the glue to highlight where the pieces are reconnected.  It’s a philosophy that believes that the “brokenness” is part of its history, which should be honored instead of being ignored.  Horses and Heroes honors the service and futures of the cast and all those who have served.

Additionally, Horses and Heroes will be hiring veterans for jobs in front of and behind the cameras.    There are already many veterans working in the entertainment industry.  The production team will give the necessary training and experience to those who want new careers.

Most equine centers offer their programs free to veterans. As non-profits, they are limited by their ability to raise funds.  The centers that host Horses and Heroes will be paid a location fee, receive national exposure, and a percentage of the net profits from the season they host.

Horses and Heroes' production team is looking for equity investors and corporations that
want their mission to succeed.  To raise awareness and generate development funds, they have created a line of shirts that are shipped directly from the manufacturer and cost approximately $35. The link is on the website, along with the links to find equine centers around the nation.  Veterans can’t go back and make a brand-new start, but with your support, they can start from now and make a brand-new end.

Helping veterans heal and reclaim their lives

Horses and Heroes is a Reality TV series, which combines the highly effective Peer Support Therapy with Equine Therapy. Unlike most in the genre, it will focus on healing and positive growth rather than endorsing bad behavior. Each season will bring together veterans from WWII to the current conflicts. They will be sharing their challenges and supporting each other as they find new solutions to their physical and emotional challenges. They know the talk because they have walked the walk. They see the dodges and will be able to call each other on them. Sparks may fly. Tempers may flare, especially when they force each other to face their ghosts. But there will also be laughter and fun as they rebuild the comradery, which kept them safe and strong. The snarkiness and practical jokes between the branches don't simply end. There is always room for just one more. When it airs, it will reach into the homes of the veterans, who need to hear that they are not alone, and give them information as well as permission they need to also heal. They will help each other find their way back to the world. Veterans can’t go back and make a brand new start, but they can start from now and make a brand new end.

The ethics of making a profit

As the creator and Executive Producer of Horses and Heroes, I need to clarify the purpose and parameters of Horses and Heroes. It has never has been a non-profit company. Horses and Heroes combine equine therapy with peer support therapy to create an unscripted TV series that will empower veterans to reclaim their lives. Each season, eight veterans will come together with the hosts, Craig Sawyer and Tim Abell along with the Therapists on the hosting ranch and the team therapist, Dave Ferruolo. They will work together to identify and address their core issues. Unlike most in the genre, Horses and Heroes is all about healing and forward movement. Yesterday, I was accused to trying to make a profit off others' pain. The owner of a ranch said, "It is immoral to capitalize on the recovery of our wounded veterans." I debated with myself about how to or if I should address this accusation. Staying silent and letting it slid would only add credence to her charges.
Horses and Heroes is a production company that's sole purpose is to produce the unscripted TV series, Horses and Heroes. It is a for-profit company that is looking for equity investors and a corporate cross-branding partner. Although we wouldn't turn down donates, we are not actively seeing them out. Investors, expect and deserve to make a profit on their investment. That is why they invest. The corporate partnership with television programming has been around since the beginning of television. Texaco Star Theater and Mutual of Omaha's the Wild Kingdom are only two examples. We are offering an updated and active version of what was done before.
As for the morality of making a profit off the pain and recovery of others, the same could be said of everyone in medicine from the janitor to the CEOs, lawyers, drug manufacturers, including those who do the research, those in the funeral industry--all of them and more make a profit of the physical and emotional challenges of others. If they didn't, they wouldn't be able to donate to the non-profits such as this ranch.
We will be hiring veterans for both in front of and behind the cameras. We will be paying a fair wage plus covering the travel, housing, and food expenses during the production, including for the eight veterans going through the therapy on air. The ranch will be paid a sizeable location fee as well as receiving a great deal of promotion. After the show. we will be arranging aftercare for the veterans who went through the therapy. Everyone wins, especially those veterans, who watch the show and seek help afterward.

How to fight back and reclaim your life

I'm too small to make a difference. This is a belief people use not to get involved and make a difference. It is only a perspective. People are as great or small as they believe they are. It sounds simply yet it is the difference between successful people and those who fail to try to achieve.

This self-defeating belief is frequently reinforced by others. They use it to control individuals and groups into supporting their agenda. Usually the pattern begins in childhood with parents using manipulation and in some cases physical force to impose their will. Whether consciously or sub-consciously, they teach the message that it is permissible for others to control you if they are bigger and stronger. They effectively steal you power and ability to fight for your self esteem. This message continues into adulthood with the friends and partners we choose. How we feel about ourselves is reflected back to us with the people we invite into our lives, because they reinforce both our positive and negative self speak.

Media campaigns have been designed to make people insecure in order to create a demand for a product. Shaming and blaming creates the insecurity they need to influence the consumers' spending habits. The weight loss industry is a prime example. Those companies promote the message that over weight people are lesser than thin people. They can't be loved, happy, or successful. But if you buy their product you will loose weight and suddenly you will have and be all those wonderful things. This is the common marketing theme. Want to be cool?--Buy our car. Wear our clothes. Eat at our restaurant. Use the latest tech toy. Yet no matter how much you buy, it will never be enough, because they are always upgrading and creating new products, which makes what you own obsolete and no longer cool. Only by buying the latest product will you be able to reclaim your cool you. It is a vicious, never ending cycle for as long as you believe their messages and buy into their agendas.

Power seeking people achieve their goals by creating an us verses them mentality. It gives one group permission to blame another person or group for their lot in life, which helps them avoid taking responsibility for their words and deeds. But it is a double edge sword. Pointing fingers at others deflects responsibility, but it also gives away personal power. If the other person or group is accountable for what you say and do that means they have more control over your life than you do. This blame game also effectively isolate individuals and groups Those, who feel alone and powerless, can be easily manipulate and controlled through their need to sit at the cool kids table. When that status is threatened, they will do or say whatever is necessary to protect that bond.

You are too small to make a difference if you allow yourself to believe it. If you think size really matters you've never been alone in a closed room with a fly or a mosquito. Everyone has the power to change their destiny if they choose to believe in themselves. Whether it be directly or indirectly, an individual, standing in her or his own power, also uplifts and empowers all the lives she or he touches. We are the difference. We have the power to create change or stagnation. We only have to believe that we can in order to do.

The ghost of a murdered child bring his parents back together after they have reincarnated. He needs them to remember their lives together and forgive. If he succeeds, they will all heal and he will be freed to also reincarnate. If he fails, their need for revenge will damn them all

Elizabeth was asked by her mentor to teach a writing course at a small college. Since she never forgets a kindness, she reluctantly agrees. Arriving in town, she instantly regrets her decision. She wants to run, but she is honor bound to stay. Even as the ghost of a small child begs her to forgive, the memories of another time arouse feelings of hatred that she doesn't understand and cannot control. When she meets Shane, all of their lives are thrown onto a dangerous collision course from which they can neither run, nor can they hide. The question is, "Can they overcome their tragic past or will they be doomed to repeat it.

With the logline, "when love is forever, death is only the beginning, Never Can Say Good-bye is comparable to Ghost and The Others.

Kidnapped as a child, Rikki is forced to defend her life from her envious mother, who is more than willing to kill to steal her spiritual gifts. When Rikki escapes, Sandra turns her attention on others with power gifts, who are more vulnerable. Can Rikki find the strength and courage to once again face her mother and stop her or will Sandra use Rikki's guilt to weaken her to the point that she is unable save herself or anyone else?

Katherine was born with the power to control the elements. Her whistle called the winds. Her tears refreshed the earth. She was able to see into the realms where fools and angels fear to tread. Her daughter, Sandra, was born with gifts that were complimentary—or they should have been. Sandra had the ability to nurture and heal. Her gifts gave her the ability to see and heal others' pain. She could foresee their destinies and give them the courage to embrace their futures Yet, it was not enough. Sandra wanted more more direct control over the world and the realms beyond. When her daughters' developed the gifts she craved, Sandra's envy turned to hatred. When a voice from the dark void reached out and asked, “What would you do to have their power. Sandra replied, “Whatever it takes.”

Eye of Ra is an occult-horror, which is comparable to The Exorcist and Amityville Horror with the tagline, “when a mother eats her young, no one is safe.”

Memorial Day has become Patriotism for Profit

Do you believe that veterans are worth the costs of a cup of coffee or a drink?

We are producing a Reality series called, Horses and Heroes. It combines the highly effective Peer Support Therapy with Equine Therapy. They will be sharing their challenges and supporting each other as they find new solutions. They know the talk, because they have walked the walk. But we need your support. We need to raise $8,000.00 in development funds to keep the project going, while we raise the production funding. To honor those who gave their all and give veterans the ability to rebuild their lives, please support our efforts to produce Horses and Heroes by giving us the gift 5.00 through our website by clicking here.

Until You Walk The Path, You Won’t Know Where it Goes will be chatting the founder of HARTH Foundation, Sherry Atherton on May 19, 2016 at 3 pm eastern as we talk about the foundation's efforts to help veterans.

During her extensive business career, Sherry Atherton worked as a ‘high-tech’ executive, who participated in three company IPOs. Being very familiar with what it takes to make a business successful, she has built first class, scalable organizations from the ground up and knows how to build teams oriented for success.  After leaving her fulfilling, corporate life, Sherry became an independent consultant and worked with several start-ups at various stages in their development.

A cancer survivor, Atherton has experienced firsthand the challenges of dealing with major life trauma and the healing power of being around horses  Now she wants to leverage her experience to build a respected organization that focuses on helping others that can benefit from horse assisted counseling.

HARTH Foundation is a Texas 501(c)(3) non-profit located in Burnet, just NW of Austin on the shores of beautiful Lake Buchanan. The Texas Hill Country is the perfect environment to escape the hectic demands of everyday life, and focus on healing and recovery with the horses that are the heartbeat of the HARTH programs. It provides free horse assisted counseling and programs for veterans, active duty service members, and their families.

HARTH provides a range of services for each individual by developing a person-centered program that works best for him/her. At HARTH, both the horses and the environment in general are an integral part of the therapeutic process. They always keep their dogtags

They raised their hand and swore an oath to defend the country against all enemies both domestic and abroad.  They did their duty.  They stood the line.  They risked their lives. They took other lives in defense of the nation.  They protected each other.  They fulfilled their commitment.  They received their honors as they took off their uniform and rejoined civilian life only to find that comradery that helped them through the challenges and stress of military service was also boxed away.

While in service no brother or sister in arms was left behind. However, many found themselves without a support system to help them through the transition from military personnel to veteran.   It takes more than three hots and cot to move past the experiences that permanent altered lives from the inside out.  The person, who raised their hand and took the oath, no longer exists.  Whether combat or non-com, peace time or conflict, putting on the uniform meant setting aside their individuality for the good of the whole.   Basic did more than train them for battle; it broke down the barriers between them and rebuilt them as a unit, which is was capable of working as single entity.  Egos were set aside.  Their competition in training strengthened and enhanced the whole.  Their lives depended on their ability to trust and rely on each other.

Civilians can’t or won’t understand.  Serving is more than a job, it is who they became as a person.  They no longer saw themselves as “I” or “me”, but as “us” and “we”.    While civilians compete for themselves, military personnel fight for the group.     That mindset doesn’t just end by taking off the uniform.
