Jackie Kaschel is the Executive Director and Founder of PEACE Ranch; a faith based community center founded to provide experiential, equine assisted counseling and educational activities using horses for the greater Grand Traverse region. The ranch serves a broad population with EAGALA Model equine-assisted activities and specializes with at risk youth, trauma-based issues for children and Veterans and difficult to treat issues like addiction and autism.Jackie oversees all aspects of the organization including staff, program design, implementation, assessment and provides overall organizational direction.

Jackie is an Advanced Certified MH/ES and Professional Mentor through the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association to practice EAGALA Model equine-assisted psychotherapy and personal development. Her love of horses began in childhood but expertise was developed as an adult when she achieved the Partnership Level through the Parelli Natural Horsemanship curriculum in 2007. Since then, Jackie has taught herd dynamics, equine communication, and their practical application to hundreds of students. Her forte is with traumatized horses having rehabilitated and trained 50+ rescue horses, many of which were unable to be handled.

Social Work veteran, Jan Stump offers the culmination of knowledge and experience in the Social Work field – trauma care, expressive therapies, training & teaching. Experience with children, adults, and families, sexual trauma, war atrocities, addiction, chronic pain. Highly motivated self-starter, excellent communication and team-building skills, extensive knowledge/experience, and a survival sense of humor.

Originally, Horses and Heroes was to be an episode in our series about horses, Spirit of a Nation. However, when I started doing the research, I quickly learned that there were many diverse veterans' stories to be told and a greater need for them to be shared than what one episode could contain. I decided to set Spirit of the Nation aside and develop it at a later date.

Horses and Heroes is a Reality TV series, which combines the highly effective Peer Support Therapy with Equine Therapy. Unlike most in the genre, it will focus on healing and positive growth rather than endorsing bad behavior. Each season will bring together veterans from WWII to the current conflicts. They will be sharing their challenges and supporting each other as they find new solutions to their physical and emotional challenges. They know the talk because they have walked the walk. They see the dodges and will be able to call each other on them. Sparks may fly. Tempers may flare, especially when they force each other to face their ghosts. But there will also be laughter and fun as they rebuild the comradery, which kept them safe and strong. The snarkiness and practical jokes between the branches don't simply end. There is always room for just one more. When it airs, it will reach into the homes of the veterans, who need to hear that they are not alone, and give them information as well as permission they need to also heal. They will help each other find their way back to the world. Veterans can’t go back and make a brand new start, but they can start from now and make a brand new end.

Additionally, veterans will be hired for jobs both in front of and behind the cameras. There are already many veterans in the industry. They will be given priority for the jobs. But we will also be doing the necessary training that veterans will need for new careers.

The ethics of making a profit

As the creator and Executive Producer of Horses and Heroes, I need to clarify the purpose and parameters of Horses and Heroes. It has never has been a non-profit company. Horses and Heroes combine equine therapy with peer support therapy to create an unscripted TV series that will empower veterans to reclaim their lives. Each season, eight veterans will come together with the hosts, Craig Sawyer and Tim Abell along with the Therapists on the hosting ranch and the team therapist, Dave Ferruolo. They will work together to identify and address their core issues. Unlike most in the genre, Horses and Heroes is all about healing and forward movement. Yesterday, I was accused to trying to make a profit off others' pain. The owner of a ranch said, "It is immoral to capitalize on the recovery of our wounded veterans." I debated with myself about how to or if I should address this accusation. Staying silent and letting it slid would only add credence to her charges.

Horses and Heroes is a production company that's sole purpose is to produce the unscripted TV series, Horses and Heroes. It is a for-profit company that is looking for equity investors and a corporate cross-branding partner. Although we wouldn't turn down donates, we are not actively seeing them out. Investors, expect and deserve to make a profit on their investment. That is why they invest. The corporate partnership with television programming has been around since the beginning of television. Texaco Star Theater and Mutual of Omaha's the Wild Kingdom are only two examples. We are offering an updated and active version of what was done before.

As for the morality of making a profit off the pain and recovery of others, the same could be said of everyone in medicine from the janitor to the CEOs, lawyers, drug manufacturers, including those who do the research, those in the funeral industry--all of them and more make a profit of the physical and emotional challenges of others. If they didn't, they wouldn't be able to donate to the non-profits such as this ranch.

We will be hiring veterans for both in front of and behind the cameras. We will be paying a fair wage plus covering the travel, housing, and food expenses during the production, including for the eight veterans going through the therapy on air. The ranch will be paid a sizeable location fee as well as receiving a great deal of promotion. After the show. we will be arranging aftercare for the veterans who went through the therapy. Everyone wins, especially those veterans, who watch the show and seek help afterward.

Veterans Day: More than a Marketing Tool

Tomorrow is Veteran's Day.  Once again, there are a rash of sales that have nothing to do with helping veterans or veterans' organizations.  They are merely using them as a marketing tool to sell their products. 

As a writer and producer, I honor military personnel and veterans in my work.  It's why I created Horses and Heroes and Operation Home Base.  Both TV series tell the stories of those, who have and continue to serve.

Horses and Heroes combines Equine Therapy with Peer Support Therapy as eight veterans per season support each other as they reclaim their lives.  Unlike most in the genre, it supports healing and positive forward movement rather than endorsing bad behavior.

The scripted series, Operation Home Base combines the best elements of MASH, The Waltons, and NCIS to create a family of man drama about forgiveness and second chances. By combining real life stories with a fictional international conspiracy, OHB  builds a bridge of understanding between civilians and those who serve.

Horses and Heroes is first on the slate.  We have two amazing hosts: Tim Abell and Craig Sawyer as well as a therapist/veteran coordinator, Dave Ferruolo.  All three are veterans as will be most of the crew.  

We need your help. We need introductions to investors and corporations that would like to market there product, while supporting those who serve, in socially responsible way.  But  even if you don't have wealthy friends, who invest or contacts within corporations, you can still help.  The proceeds from my books bought on the website will be used to fund Horses and Heroes.  You can buy the PDFs and recommend others do the same.  They are inexpensive, but every little bit helps.  If you have a little extra, you can donate it to the production fund on the website.  You have the power to make a the difference.

God Saw a Butterfly A divinely inspired transformational parable A review by Cate Cavanagh This afternoon was cleverly planned. It required making an appointment with myself and rescheduling all others. I scan the bedroom. The pillows are cautiously situated to sit up straight for the best comfort or reading. I carefully place my tea and biscuits on the night table and my pooch, Marilyn, waits for me so she can stretch along my side. I silence the phone and reach for my afternoon treasure to unfold. I clutch the book greedily for you see in this age of technology it is so very hard to touch and smell a real book This afternoon is different. I will read a new book written by one of my favorite authors, Theresa Chaze. Follow me as I unfold fold one of those little miracles-Theresa Chaze. God Saw a Butterfly is a true parable for this world in which so many seek their truth. Throughout we are drawn into a work that is a metaphor….or is it? We become aware that life is often just a playful sound track upon which all is merely a dance of questions. But what are the answers? Answers, comfortable or not, glide amidst colorful enchantments of shimmer and love and fear. It is only through the maze of emotions can we begin to see that growth is being aware that all things are integrated, codependent and never apart from the whole of existence…and somewhere along our travels the importance of the “now” must never escape us. As we seek to grow we must be wary of our fear factor that would alienate us from a glorious universal unity much as the second son caused his own isolation. But that side and his would lead us to deception rather than the truth and faith that is our heritage. As does Shylon we look for home yet we flit from one floor to another with home seeming to stretch beyond our grasp. Yet we must accept that constant growth will guide us through reality after reality hence comprising what is to be our lives. Shylon learns how easily we lose trust in not just ourselves, seeking for “now”, but the collection of wisdom that is our right to achieve if we only let it. Throughout Shylon’s journey she mirrors our own search for truth but will we, like Shylon, reach a point of abandoning oneself for the illusion of truth? Hopefully our stubborn natures will not disrupt the fine threads that connect the “hither” and “yonder” or from facing the doubt that encourages failure to accept responsibility for our own errors. As Shylon presents a snapshot of her evolution so might we take to opportunity to pause to do the same. And so the parable begins our own journey of accepting that awareness yields honor and compassion and caring for all levels of life. Herein lies the parable for our birth, life and purpose.
