Equine Therapy for Veterans

Always listening. Triggered by every sound. Every movement. Fight or flight?  Check.  Double check.  Adrenaline explosion.  A flash in the distance. Friend or foe?  Message or warning? Heart pounding.  Always scanning.  Always on high alert.  Screaming silence.  Moments of sleep shattered by night terrors.  Nervous system overload becomes the norm; emotional and physical exhaustion becomes a way of life.

Veterans, who have experienced physical and emotional trauma, call this just another day that ends in “Y”.   No matter how it is labeled, the trauma they experienced affects every aspect of their life until the core issue has been addressed and healed.   Medication masks symptoms; however, they are highly addictive and never resolve the real source of the pain.  Talk therapy has mixed results. Civilians simply don’t understand the military mindset.  Peer-support, while more effective, is more difficult to find.

While in service, personnel are told to suck it up and just get over it.  It’s part of the culture.  To show weakness, especially during combat, makes the person a liability to the sisterhood and brotherhood.  While in service, the shared experience gives courage and comfort to the whole unit.  Yet, after separation, that mindset becomes a liability as the camaraderie vanishes and is replaced by isolation.

Yet, there are ways for veterans to rebuild their lives and reclaim that support system that doesn’t involve addictive drugs with horrible side effects. Equine therapy is an effective healing methodology that has been around for decades.    As with all therapy animals, horses are chosen for their temperament and intelligence.  Working with horses provides comfort and support as they help the handler actively restructure their emotional responses and strengthen their bodies.

Horses' innate ability to sense the handler’s emotions provides real-time biofeedback.  They can hear and match a person’s heartbeat from nearly four feet away. The horses reflect back the handler’s emotional state. If the handler is relaxed and calm, the horse will be as well.  However, if the handler is emotional—angry, frustrated, or afraid, the horse will become anxious.  However, instead of becoming aggressive, they will shy away, run, or refuse to cooperate.  This real-time feedback helps the handler understand and work through their triggers.  The mission is to remain calm and focused in the moment so that the horse will trust the person enough to interact with them. In this way, working with horses helps the handler stay focused on the present moment.

For many people, equine therapy evokes images of riding horses. However, this is not always the case.  There are two primary equine therapy methodologies: EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association) and PATH International. (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International).  Both are national and international organizations that set standards that each associated equine center must meet to be certified by the organization.   Horses are never ridden at Eagla therapy centers. The focus remains on the boots-on-the-ground interaction between the veterans and horses.  However, the PATH-certified programs offer both riding and non-riding programs.    Both programs heal emotional and physical challenges.  Riding a horse uses the same muscles a person uses to walk, which strengthens the body, while motivating the mind into forward thinking.    As part of the certification process, the program must be associated with a state-certified counselor with a master's in mental health and have a hands-on equine certification.

Equine centers can be found in most states, mostly in rural or semi-rural areas.  As non-profit organizations, they offer the therapy free to veterans.  However, they are limited as to how many veterans they are able to help by their fundraising capabilities.  In these financially challenging times, the centers have been doubly hit by the increasing costs to care for their horses and the reduction of funding, especially from the VA.  Donating to local centers helps veterans while providing yourself with good karma points and a tax deduction.

To find the closest center, visit Horses and Heroes’ website.  It has direct links to both the EAGALA and PATH websites.  Please click on the link below.

The unscripted documentary TV series, Horses and Heroes, combines the highly effective Peer Support Therapy with Equine Therapy. Unlike most in the unscripted genre, it will focus on healing and positive growth rather than endorsing bad behavior. Each season will bring together veterans from World War II to the current conflicts. They will share their challenges and support each other as they find new solutions to their physical and emotional challenges. They know the talk because they have walked the walk. They see the dodges and will be able to call each other on them. Sparks may fly. Tempers may flare, especially when they force each other to face their ghosts. But there will also be laughter and fun as they rebuild the camaraderie, which kept them safe and strong during their time of service. The snarkiness and practical jokes between the branches don't simply end. There is always room for just one more prank. This interaction will help them rebuild that sense of brotherhood and sisterhood, which will help them reclaim their civilian lives. When it airs, it will reach the veterans, who need to hear that they are not alone and give them information as well as the permission they need to also heal. They will help each other find their way back to the World. Veterans can’t go back and make a brand new start, but they can start from now and make a brand new end.

Veterans can't go back and make a brand new start but they can start from now and make a brand new end

Veterans are people—not political agendas. They served our nation, and many now face life-altering challenges without the support they’ve earned. I am the Creator and Executive Producer of Horses and Heroes, a veteran-based documentary TV series combining equine therapy and peer support to help veterans heal and move forward. The series will consist of 16 episodes (18 broadcast hours) and feature 10 veterans, including two public figures, while employing veterans both on and off camera. We are seeking a corporate partner aligned with supporting veterans and reaching the 18–49-year-old demographic. Our presenting partner would receive prominent brand integration, audience engagement opportunities, and exclusive access to unaired content, while directly supporting nonprofit equine therapy centers that serve veterans at no cost. If this aligns with your mission, buy our shirts and recommend others do the same. Thank you for your time, Theresa Pachesny Chaze Creator & Executive Producer, Horses and Heroes Website #veterans #hiringveterans #documentaryTVseries #equinetherapy #HorsesandHeroes #TheresaChaze

Horses and Heroes: A documentary TV series for veterans

Horses and Heroes will take ten veterans, including two celebrities, on a healing adventure of self-discovery as they confront their ghosts and make peace with them.  The cast will be interacting with each other as well as the horses.  On the surface, it sounds ambiguous and exploitative. However, Horses and Heroes is solely about healing and new beginnings, not exploiting people’s pain to make a buck.  Which is why the series will never have a typical teaser reel.   It would be cruel to bring the team together to start the healing process, which will open their wounds and then tell them to just put a pin in it.

Military personnel and veterans have a language and awareness that is all their own. Vet-to-vet support brings veterans together to support each other as they confront their ghosts. They know the language.  They know the dodges.  They can see the distance growing in each other’s eyes and know how to pull the other back from the edge.  Tempers may flare.  Tears may fall, But the sisterhood and brotherhood that kept them safe will also bring them the rest of the way home.

That’s not to say that Horses and Heroes will be all sad sob stories.  On the contrary, they will be the exception, not the rule.  Snarkiness, dark humor, and practical jokes, especially between the different branches, open the door for “you ain't seen nothing yet”.  This makes the cast the Y factor.  Anyone who has ever worked with animals knows how unpredictable they can be.  Horses are even more so, which is why no matter how the production team pre-plans and organizes, the horses will always be the X-factor that will make things go sideways.

In this case, X plus Y will add up to a unique series that supports healing, positive forward movement, and new beginnings.  Japan has a specialized art form called Kintsugi, which means "golden joinery."  It is the process of repairing broken pottery by mixing powdered gold, silver, or platinum in the glue to highlight where the pieces are reconnected.  It’s a philosophy that believes that the “brokenness” is part of its history, which should be honored instead of being ignored.  Horses and Heroes honors the service and futures of the cast and all those who have served.

Additionally, Horses and Heroes will be hiring veterans for jobs in front of and behind the cameras.    There are already many veterans working in the entertainment industry.  The production team will give the necessary training and experience to those who want new careers.

Most equine centers offer their programs free to veterans. As non-profits, they are limited by their ability to raise funds.  The centers that host Horses and Heroes will be paid a location fee, receive national exposure, and a percentage of the net profits from the season they host.

Horses and Heroes' production team is looking for equity investors and corporations that
want their mission to succeed.  To raise awareness and generate development funds, they have created a line of shirts that are shipped directly from the manufacturer and cost approximately $35. The link is on the website, along with the links to find equine centers around the nation.  Veterans can’t go back and make a brand-new start, but with your support, they can start from now and make a brand-new end.

Veterans: help is available

There are people who are doing their best to help. We do the best we can with what we have and what we know. When we have better and know better we do better. I represent a new TV series called Horses and Heroes. It will tell veterans' stories as they work together to find new coping skills for their physical and emotional challenges. We will also be hiring veterans in front of and behind the cameras. Although the show will entertain, the focus will be on telling their stories so civilians can understand and other veterans will know that they are not alone. It will prove that healing is possible, no matter how long ago the wound happened. It's not a cure-all. Veterans can't go back and make a brand new start but they can start from now and make a brand new end.

Our second military-based project is a scripted series called Operation Home Base. It combines real-life stories with a fictional international conspiracy. As the members of OHB help others, they heal their own wounds.

The ethics of making a profit

As the creator and Executive Producer of Horses and Heroes, I need to clarify the purpose and parameters of Horses and Heroes. It has never has been a non-profit company. Horses and Heroes combine equine therapy with peer support therapy to create an unscripted TV series that will empower veterans to reclaim their lives. Each season, eight veterans will come together with the hosts, Craig Sawyer and Tim Abell along with the Therapists on the hosting ranch and the team therapist, Dave Ferruolo. They will work together to identify and address their core issues. Unlike most in the genre, Horses and Heroes is all about healing and forward movement. Yesterday, I was accused to trying to make a profit off others' pain. The owner of a ranch said, "It is immoral to capitalize on the recovery of our wounded veterans." I debated with myself about how to or if I should address this accusation. Staying silent and letting it slid would only add credence to her charges.
Horses and Heroes is a production company that's sole purpose is to produce the unscripted TV series, Horses and Heroes. It is a for-profit company that is looking for equity investors and a corporate cross-branding partner. Although we wouldn't turn down donates, we are not actively seeing them out. Investors, expect and deserve to make a profit on their investment. That is why they invest. The corporate partnership with television programming has been around since the beginning of television. Texaco Star Theater and Mutual of Omaha's the Wild Kingdom are only two examples. We are offering an updated and active version of what was done before.
As for the morality of making a profit off the pain and recovery of others, the same could be said of everyone in medicine from the janitor to the CEOs, lawyers, drug manufacturers, including those who do the research, those in the funeral industry--all of them and more make a profit of the physical and emotional challenges of others. If they didn't, they wouldn't be able to donate to the non-profits such as this ranch.
We will be hiring veterans for both in front of and behind the cameras. We will be paying a fair wage plus covering the travel, housing, and food expenses during the production, including for the eight veterans going through the therapy on air. The ranch will be paid a sizeable location fee as well as receiving a great deal of promotion. After the show. we will be arranging aftercare for the veterans who went through the therapy. Everyone wins, especially those veterans, who watch the show and seek help afterward.

Can Veterans reclaim their lives?

Horses and Heroes is a Reality TV series, which combines the highly effective Peer Support Therapy with Equine Therapy. Unlike most in the genre, it will focus on healing and positive growth rather than endorsing bad behavior. Each season will bring together the veterans from WWII to the current conflicts. They will be sharing their challenges and supporting each other as they find new solutions. They know the talk, because they have walked the walk. They see the dodges and will be able to call each other on them. Sparks may fly. Tempers may flare, especially when they force each other to face the ghosts. But will also be laughter and fun as they rebuild the comradery. The snarkiness and practical jokes between the branches don't simply end. There is always room for just one more. When it airs, it will reach into the homes of the veterans, who need to hear that they are not alone and give them the information as well as the permission to also heal. They will help each other find their way back to the world. Veterans can’t go back and make a brand new start; but they can start from now and make a brand new end.

The ghost of a murdered child bring his parents back together after they have reincarnated. He needs them to remember their lives together and forgive. If he succeeds, they will all heal and he will be freed to also reincarnate. If he fails, their need for revenge will damn them all

Elizabeth was asked by her mentor to teach a writing course at a small college. Since she never forgets a kindness, she reluctantly agrees. Arriving in town, she instantly regrets her decision. She wants to run, but she is honor bound to stay. Even as the ghost of a small child begs her to forgive, the memories of another time arouse feelings of hatred that she doesn't understand and cannot control. When she meets Shane, all of their lives are thrown onto a dangerous collision course from which they can neither run, nor can they hide. The question is, "Can they overcome their tragic past or will they be doomed to repeat it.

With the logline, "when love is forever, death is only the beginning, Never Can Say Good-bye is comparable to Ghost and The Others.

Kidnapped as a child, Rikki is forced to defend her life from her envious mother, who is more than willing to kill to steal her spiritual gifts. When Rikki escapes, Sandra turns her attention on others with power gifts, who are more vulnerable. Can Rikki find the strength and courage to once again face her mother and stop her or will Sandra use Rikki's guilt to weaken her to the point that she is unable save herself or anyone else?

Katherine was born with the power to control the elements. Her whistle called the winds. Her tears refreshed the earth. She was able to see into the realms where fools and angels fear to tread. Her daughter, Sandra, was born with gifts that were complimentary—or they should have been. Sandra had the ability to nurture and heal. Her gifts gave her the ability to see and heal others' pain. She could foresee their destinies and give them the courage to embrace their futures Yet, it was not enough. Sandra wanted more more direct control over the world and the realms beyond. When her daughters' developed the gifts she craved, Sandra's envy turned to hatred. When a voice from the dark void reached out and asked, “What would you do to have their power. Sandra replied, “Whatever it takes.”

Eye of Ra is an occult-horror, which is comparable to The Exorcist and Amityville Horror with the tagline, “when a mother eats her young, no one is safe.”

Unlike most in the genre, it will focus on healing and positive growth rather than endorsing bad behavior. We will be bringing together the veterans from WWII to the current conflicts. But we need your support. We need to raise $8,000.00 in development funds to keep the project going, while we raise the production funding. To honor those who gave their all and give veterans the ability to rebuild their lives, please support our efforts to produce Horses and Heroes by giving us the gift 5.00 through our website by clicking here.
