Until You Walk The Path, You Won’t Know Where it Goes is hosting author and wildlife activist Craig Downer on February 6 at 1 pm eastern. Downer talks about the new attacks on North America‘s wild horses and his new book, The Wild Horse Conspiracy.

Craig C. Downer is a wildlife ecologist (UCalifBerk, UNevReno, UKanLawr, UDurhamUK) who has extensively studied both the wild horses of the West and the endangered mountain tapirs of the northern Andes. He has given speeches and written many articles, including encyclopedic, and several books. His works are both popular and scientific, in English, Spanish and translated to German. Several of these concern wild horses, their ecological contribution, their North American evolutionary roots, their great natural and social value and their survival plight. He is a member of the World Conservation Union, Species Survival Commission and has written the Action Plan for the mountain tapir (1997). Fluent in Spanish and competent in French, he is also a member of the American Society of Mammalogists. One of his books, entitled Wild Horses: Living Symbols of Freedom (1977), examines these magnificent animals from a variety of perspectives, stressing their need to live both freely and naturally in appropriate habitats of sufficient size for long-term viability. He frequently emphasizes how much we owe the horse and by this he means the sharing of freedom on the land here in this world we share as home. Downer has also written a book of poetry Streams of the Soul (2005) containing several illustrated poems concerning wild horses, plays the piano and composes music. His speech Forever Wild and Free (Wild Horse Forum (ISPMB), Las Vegas, Columbus Day, 2008) received a standing ovation and has been posted on several websites. He has also been a plaintiff in several legal suits to restore wild horses and burros at viable population levels in their legal herd areas throughout the West and has given testimony. He is a 4th generation Nevadan and grew up with his best friend Poco, a tall chestnut stallion, with whom he had many adventures in the deserts and mountains of western Nevada and eastern California.

Dr. Catherine Feher-Elston is an internationally-acclaimed author. An archaeologist and historian, she works extensively with environmental and indigenous rights issues. She wrote the Naturesong book series which includes Wolfsong: A Natural and Fabulous History of Wolves and the award-winning Ravensong: A Natural and Fabulous History of Ravens and Crows.

She has lived and worked among many of the world’s indigenous peoples, including Montana’s Northern Cheyenne, where she chaired the Chief Dull Knife College communications division and founded the Little Wolf Writing and History Center.

Her involvement with wolves started in the 1990s, when her work in journalism brought her to the Mogollon Rim country of Arizona and New Mexico. She covered Mexican wolf reintroduction. Among her interests is wildlife rehabilitation. As Fate dictated, a wolf cub with a defective liver came into her life. She cared for Mowgli for two years before his condition took his life. As a result, she wrote Wolfsong, in an effort to share the facts about wolves with the world. Research for Wolfsong included spending time in the Yellowstone Country.

Currently, Feher-Elston works in development for a Northern Rockies community. She works to support environmental sustainability, museum programs and

Many of the most important times and events in a person’s life were brought about by coincidences-- chance meetings or sudden inspirations, which awakens us to new dreams or fresh perspectives. But how many of these incidences were actually brought about not by divine intervention, but by the decisions we made throughout our lives? Just think about thousands of choices we make every day. They lead us to one destiny or another. Yet how many decisions are based not on free choice, but on contracts made between souls to fulfill karmic debts?

Using researching his new book as an excuse, Michael chooses to visit his friend Lynne in Coyote Springs. In his conscious mind, he wants to rekindle their romantic relationship; instead he fixates on the Randolph Bellow and his family.

Through researching the dead lumber baron, he meets his granddaughter Shane Bellows. Nearly half his age, Shane arouses passion within him. He calls it love. Lynne knows better. He doesn’t love Shane any more than he had loved her. Lynne knows that there has been one woman who has always had his heart. Just because he has yet to meet her, it doesn’t mean she doesn’t exist. Against her and others’ advice, Michael and Shane marry.

The town is shocked when the owner of the Bellows Mansion offers to allow the newly weds to move into the old house. Michael is ecstatic. Growing up, Shane heard how the ghost of her grandfather’s first wife, Sara Jane, had tormented his second family until they were forced to flee for their own safety. It was sold to Amanda Bellows just to be rid of the ghost’s curse. Although Shane fears the house, she loves Michael more and reluctantly agrees to live there.

After moving in, Michael’s obsession deepens. It’s all he can think and dream about. He knows there is more to it than can be seen. He searches the old records and finds what he is looking for. Taking the panel off the wall does more than reveal the hidden room. Turning the knob, he opens the door to the past. Crossing the threshold starts him down the path, which could once again lead to obsessive love, betrayal, and murder as he reconnects with the past.

In spite of her reservations, Elizabeth agrees to teach a writing course at a small college. Her instinct tells her to run in the opposite direction, but she never forgets a kindness and the man who asked was the one who made her career possible. Arriving in town, she instantly regrets her decision. But as much as she wants to run, the town draws her in, awakening old memories of passion, anger and fear. By the time she realizes what is happening, it is too late to run. The doors of her past have been opened and the memories overwhelm her.

Love, guilt and betrayal intertwine in a kaleidoscope of memories as the past and present abruptly collide. Can they remember the love and learn from the past before they once again turn down the path of murder and revenge?

The following things are NOT VISIBLE, yet we all believe them to exist in our world: Air; Calories; Cold; Taste; Thought; Trust, Love; and Whisper.

While these things cannot be seen, they may be felt, heard, smelled, or tasted. No one seems to have a problem with not being able to see these things. Yet when people say they can see, talk to, and/or sense spirits --- their skepticism kicks into gear! WHY??? Because it scares them or they were trained in their upbringing to not believe! Death, spirits, and ghosts are scary to people; apparently much scarier then air, calories, cold, etc. There are people who claim to believe in God and his son Jesus, yet they have a hard time believing in the spirit world. WHY???

After all, God is the Supreme Spirit and we are all a part of God! Sooner or later when one’s body dies, and their spirit lives on, they will know the truth. It is just a shame they prefer to live with their heads buried in the sand instead of waking up to God now, while they are here on earth. And, we are supposed to be doing God’s work.

About the Author

The writing of this book, in itself, is a “Spirit Driven Event”. I had a few reasons for writing this book, the two primary reasons being: (1.) God and my spirit allies wanted me to write this book (as well as others to come; and they can be very persistent); and (2.) My spirit allies and I want to enlighten people in order for them to become aware of their spiritual abilities. Everyone possesses spiritual abilities they only need to learn how to recognize and use them for the good they were meant to be used for. There are no coincidences and everything really does happen for a reason.

I have several spiritual abilities: clairsentience, intuitive, healer, and the ability to receive infused knowledge; just to name a few. And while I usually cannot see spirits I can definitely feel them and I can usually understand their message to me. I do not consider myself a psychic or medium; however all of the above mentioned abilities are “mediumship” abilities. I have had spiritual abilities as long as I can remember (most of my life). However, sometimes they frightened me and I would refuse to deal with them. Over the past fifteen years or so I was at a place in my life where I was forced to deal with them. The spirits would not leave me alone. I have been told by many people that I am a “spirit magnet”.

Over the years I kept a journal I call “Spirit Driven Events”. This journal does not contain all of my spirit driven events, merely the ones I consider to be “really cool”. My journal consists of hundreds of events. I have selected forty-one events to include in this book which is organized into two sections. The first section contains general Spirit Driven Events; and the second section contains Spirit Driven Healing Events. Because I selected certain events from my journal, this book is not in “Spirit Driven Event #” order. While the events in this book are all true the names used (in most cases) are fictional. Any resemblance to actual names of persons, living or dead is entirely coincidental.

My hope is for you (the reader) to learn from my spiritual journey and to be able to relate to some of these events in your own life --- by having an AHA moment and realize your spiritual abilities.

SECTION I – Spirit Driven Events (SDE) in General

As I have stated before, everyone has spiritual abilities; they just need to learn what abilities they have and how to use them. God and other spirits like to communicate with us and let us know they are near. Sometimes they communicate in order to help us and sometimes the message is meant to help someone else. Sometimes deceased loved ones communicate just to let you know they are with you and thinking about you.

Spirits have many communication methods. Below are some of the many ways:
Moving objects
Dropping coins (sometimes the date on the coin is significant) or other objects
Turning lights on and off --- basically manipulating anything that is electrical --- radios, telephones, computers, televisions, etc.
Producing a smell, a thought, or song to you
Showing up in photos and videos
Talking and/or showing themselves to us
Knocking on doors and walls and/or ringing doorbells
Chirping a smoke alarm (the chirping is different than when a battery needs replacing)
Giving you infused knowledge
Appearing in your dreams to give you a message
Sending someone to help you or sending you to help someone

There are so many ways they try to communicate with us that it is difficult to list them all. You can set up ways to communicate with your loved ones who have passed. My Aunt Andrea has communicated with me in several different ways over the past thirty-four years. Over the last few years she has chosen to get my attention by chirping the downstairs bedroom smoke alarm (this is a bedroom where she seems to like to show up). She will chirp the smoke alarm until I receive and deliver her message --- then she will stop. My angels like to get my attention by chirping my smoke alarm in my bedroom. When I receive their message they too will stop chirping. Sometimes they just want to mess with me. This is when I tell them to “knock-it-off” and they do.

Just as the spirits have many ways to communicate they also have many ways to show themselves (orb, energy, partial manifestation, human, etc). The most common way is in “orb” form which you will see many on the cover and throughout this book. There are good / positive spirits and there are bad / negative spirits.

SECTION II – Spirit Driven Healing Events in General

Spiritual healing is a God given gift--- one that not everyone is gifted with. It is given to people with certain characteristics. There are many “spiritual healers” who have spent thousands of dollars on training to become healers (Reiki, energy, etc.). My spiritual healing gift is from God. My training was given to me by God and the spirit healers God sends to me. To me this has been an incredible learning experience!

The spiritual healings I perform are ALL about God, and are ALL up to God’s will--- I am merely a conduit. All the spiritual healings I do (or spiritual help I send to people) starts with “Dear God…. and ends with Thank You and Amen.” So when people thank me for the healing or spiritual help I asked to be sent I tell them not to thank me but to thank God.

Apparently I have had this ability all of my life. However, I never really knew what it was or much of anything else about this power. I know wherever I go and when I am near someone and I heat up ---I am meant to heal that person. The heating up was difficult to get used to. I would get so hot I would be dripping in perspiration --- and I certainly don’t like to sweat! People tell me how hot my hands were when I would touch them. They were amazed at the amount of intense heat that came out of me! My medium friend, Kara, would tease me that some day I was going to catch on fire!

I was lucky to have many medium friends who could see and talk to the spirit healers who came to work through me and they could tell me who they were. Apparently, at any one time six spirit healers work through me (I am assuming God sends as many as needed for the situation). While they may not always be the same spirit healers sent to me, I know my deceased aunt is always one of them. Through my trials and tribulations I have found Harry Edwards is also one who comes to work through me.

A spiritual friend of mine loaned me a book to read which was written by Harry Edwards. Apparently Harry Edwards was a spiritual healer and was acknowledged as being the closest-healer to Christ. Harry Edwards passed away in 1976 (as did my aunt). I kept the book for three weeks but never read it. I returned the book to my friend and decided to order a copy of the book for me to keep from the Harry Edwards Sanctuary in England--- this way I would read it when I had time. Meanwhile, God and my spirit healers were guiding and teaching me all I needed to know and accomplish.

On one of my trips to Michigan I tried to read the book (while on the airplane) I was able to get only about sixty pages into the book --- it kept freaking me out! While I was reading, I would find I had been guided by my spirits to do exactly everything in that book!

It took six hours to read those sixty pages because every time I found I was doing all those things I didn’t know why --- it freaked me out and I put the book aside! Sometimes as I was reading I found myself editing the book versus learning from it! To this day I still have not finished reading that book. I continue to just let God and my spirit healers guide and teach me everything I need to know and do.

Kickstarter: Some Dreams Are Big Enough to Share

Some dreams are big enough to share. When I was 12 years old and I wrote a poem for my mother as a Mother's Day gift, it was the beginning. When other people daydreamed about being their favorite TV or film character, I would invent my own character and totally change the story. The first short story I wrote was the first time my soul really breathed and I found my place in the world.

Since then there have been many stories. Each had their place. Each taught me something new about myself and the world. In the 1990's I wrote Never Can Say Good-bye. Me being me, I sent it to my favorite actress Katherine Hepburn. I wanted her to star in it as Amanda. I got two very nice notes from her, saying that she though it was wonderful, but she had retired. Life and other challenges changed my life's path for a while.

Three years ago my life changed again. I was a big fan of Days of Our Lives since Dark Shadows ended, but the writing had gotten so bad that the show was unwatchable. Me being me, I knew I could do better. I started writing alternative storylines and posting them on the NBC Days of Our Lives boards. It was just to be snarky. But it actually turned into something. I had people from around the world asking me to finish the story. So I did.

I didn't get the head writer gig, but it did start me writing script again. I created Operation Home Base after talking to a friend who used to work at Red Cross. She was one of the workers who took and received messages for military personnel. Although what she did wouldn't sustain a series, it was a starting point. I combined the concepts behind some of my favorite series like MASH and NCIS, but it wasn't enough. OHB had to be more. When you serve, it is not a single individual who is in harms way; it is everyone who loves them.

Once the pilot and first season Bible were finished, I started looking for a production company to partner with me. Through a series of coincidences and synchronicity
I learned that I’m good at producing. I am a natural scrounge and networker. It is what prompt me to create Cosmos Productions.

Never Can Say Good-bye was good script back in the 1990‘s, but after rereading it I realized I could do better. I rewrote it. As a person I’ve grown a great deal, which has made me a better writer. Never Can Say Good-bye has become a story of love, romance, forgiveness and second chances.

We have all these amazing people already attached to Never Can Say Good-bye. What we don't have is the financing. We have joined with Kickstarter to prime the pump for our financing. Greetings Mr. Snyder,

You sent me a nice form letter. No doubt you or your staff thought it would be enough to silence myself and the many others you sent it to. It’s not what you say, but what you do that reveals who you are. You are bad for the people of Michigan.

Your budget doesn’t break bad habits, it lines the pockets of your good old boys club and corporations, who have created the financial crisis in Michigan by outsourcing jobs. The fiscal reality is that you have chased away an industry that was bringing hundreds of millions of dollars and thousands of good paying jobs to the state.

In two years, the Film Incentive program had a 6 to 1 profit margin for the state. It was profitable with tax revenue, good paying jobs, it supported local businesses, and made the state look good internationally for both tourism and investment. But it was bad for the good old boys club. They couldn’t just pay minimum wage and withhold benefits and still keep quality workers. They would have been forced to compete by paying a living wage and benefits.

Also new money means diversifying the power base. The broader the base the stronger the structure. But a broad base also means sharing power, wealth and control. All of which you and buddies are fighting to prevent even if it means destroying the state in the process.

If you hadn’t attacked the film incentive program, I would be wrapping up my first feature film. It’s a 7 million dollar project, most of which was going to be spent in the state.. I would be paying business taxes, payroll, and buying locally. Michigan, specifically Traverse City, Manistee, Michigan State University and several business, including the Henderson Castle would have been shown in a very positive light to an international market. Instead, many of the people I would have hired are unemployed or under employed, including myself.

I am still looking for financing. Never Can Say Good-bye will be shot in Michigan, but only because so many people put their faith in me and it. I won’t let them down. However, the TV series, Operation Home Base, along with the tax revenue, jobs, support for local business and the good PR is going to Oklahoma. Once it hits the air waves, I’m going to make sure everyone knows why I took the project out of Michigan and exactly who is responsible.

Your actions have qualified you for a very special honor from the people of Michigan. Seven Governors have been impeach. The people of Michigan are going to add your name to that list. You and your buddies are corruption and selfishness as basest level. You don’t care who your hurt or how many people’s lives you destroy. The only thing you care about is power and money.

The people of Michigan are not complacent. Your actions have mobilized us. We are standing together against you, those who vote with you and all you stand for. We are the people of Michigan and we are not for sale.

In 1996, an eagerly awaited sequel, The Tenth Insight: Holding the Vision, which also became an instant bestseller, joined The Celestine Prophecy. The two books spent a combined seventy-four weeks on The New York Times list, making James Redfield the best-selling hardcover author in the world in 1996, as cited in BP Report (January 1997). Snyder, Pacholka Stealing Land From Children and Families

Benton Harbor just has to follow the money to understand the method behind the Emergency Financial Manager.

Al Pacholka sponsored the EFM bill. He is the representative from Benton Harbor. He is also a former VP of one of the developers of the golf course that they have been trying to put on the Jean Clock Park site. He is also a former staffer for Congressman Fred Upton, who is part of the Whirlpool family.

Whirlpool has been trying since the 1980's to get the $500 million 530 acre public/private land development, which would include Jean Clock Park. It would include a golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus, luxury condos, mansions and a few affordable homes. The local government and the people of Benton Harbor stood in their way.

Benton Harbor is one of the first cities taken over. Suddenly, the local government no longer has any power. Gee, it doesn't take a psychic to see what's coming next. I wonder if Jack knows that he is contributing to the destruction of land that was a gift to the children and families of Benton Harbor from a grieving family as a memorial for their daughter. So is he so hard-hearted that he only cares about money like Snyder, Pacholka, and Upton?

The Declaration of Independence changed the destiny of the colonies and the world. By demanding their rights, the colonists took back their power and created not only a new country, but also a new form of government. By standing up and speaking out, they put their lives and families on the line, yet their courage became the backbone that has supported the country both in good times and bad.

Governor Snyder's policies run parallel to those of King George. His policies and actions have already cost the state millions of dollars of income and thousands of jobs by giving preferential treatment to corporations and individuals who support the Republican party. His anti-Robin Hood tactics of increasing taxes on the middle class, poor and the elder in order to give tax breaks to corporations have limited their ability to provide for their families. He has pushed through legislation that usurps the rights of the voters. Elected officials can only be dismissed or impeached at the will of those who elected them. Citizens who have exercised their legal right to of peaceful protest have been arrested.

Citing the study done by the Republican supported group, The Mackinac Center for Public Policy, Snyder declared the program was a drain on the state's economy. He caped the fund to the point of destroying its ability to attract projects to Michigan, thereby effectively sending the millions of dollars of new money and jobs other states.
However, an independent research study conducted by respected international accounting firm Ernst & Young proves that Snyder's claims are false. Commissioned by the Convention & Visitors Bureaus for metro Detroit, Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor and Traverse City, this independent study proves that the film incentive program has already shown a positive return on the states investment. The final report showed that the industry had already created 3,860 full time equivalent jobs for Michigan residents in 2010, at an average salary of $53,700- per year, and generated an estimated impact on statewide sales of $503 million in 2010 with a net return $5.94 per dollar of net credit cost. Not only did it reduce the number of people receiving unemployment benefits, but it also brought in new taxes, fees and diversified Michigan's economy. Instead expanding Michigan's economic pool with new money and jobs, Snyder has chosen to give his corporate buddies an additional $1.5 billion dollars of tax incentives and breaks to Republican supporting corporations. These corporate welfare will be paid by additional taxes for the middle-class, working poor and seniors. In addition, school budgets and aid to local governments will be slashed. This taxation policy will not only economically sabotage the middle-class, the working poor and the elderly, but it will also force more people to leave the state simply because they cannot afford to live her. This policy of corporate welfare also financially weakens small businesses. With the increasing tax burden they will be asked to assume along with the diminishing customer base, it will be nearly impossible for small businesses to pay a living wage to its workers and still make a profit,.
Snyder has pushed through legislation, which allows him take over any area he declares to be in an economic emergency. This new piece of legislation, allows Snyder to appointed emergency financial manager, who the right to dismiss the publicly elected officials and cancel existing legal contracts, while seizing all decision-making powers. The people in Benton Harbor have just learned that this legislation is not a fantasy, but a nightmare they are just beginning to live. Snyder appointed Joseph Harris as the Benton Harbor's emergency financial manager. As of Friday, Benton Harbor officials can only call meetings to order, adjourn them and approve minutes of meetings. Harris is now the sole authority in the Benton Harbor area. He can do as he will, answering only to Snyder.

Elected officials serve at the will of the voters. They are public servants, not public masters. The people of the United States are the highest authority in the land. This applies from the President on down to the county officials. If a person is elected, they work for the people who gave them the job. Politicians only have as much power as the citizens grant them. It is by their will, not the corporations, that politicians have the power to make changes.

However, it seems that both politicians and the citizens have forgotten their roles. Politicians see themselves above the laws, answering only to their selfish best interests. Citizens, either though apathy or ignorance have been allowing their servants to rule their lives.

It is not too late to balance the scales and hold our servants responsible for their actions. As the employers of all public servants, constituents have the right to complain and make demands. They also have the right to ask questions and expect answers. In addition, only citizens have the right to terminate a public servant's employment. Whether it be through impeachment or voter sanction dismissal, citizens have the right to end the employment of any public servant, who does not meet their needs, expectations, or who violates the publics trust.

Like a candle in the dark, individuals can do little. But if enough people combined the lights, they can make the darkest night as bright as noon on a cloudless summer day. It is time to stand up and speak out for our rights as citizens of Michigan. We have the right to demand that the people we elected to represent us, not just their selfish interests and those of large corporations.

I am asking for the citizens of Michigan and those outside our borders to combine their energy and voices to organized a letter, email and fax campaign that I'm calling Snail Mail Fridays and Electronic Wednesdays. By taking a few moments out of these two days to jointly voice our displeasure to the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, our legislator and senator, we will be able to make ourselves be heard over the corporate greed and manipulations. It would be four letters once a week plus any extras you have the time and will to send. Snail mail letters sent from within Michigan on Friday would reach offices on Monday. Faxes and emails would be sent throughout the day on Wednesdays.

For those outside Michigan who think this isn't your problem, so you don't feel the need to help—think again. Michigan isn't the only state who has a dictatorial governor nor will Snyder be the last if his policies are allowed to stand. You can either help us stop this in our backyard or fight it in your own front yard. The choice is yours.

Truth About the Michigan Film Incentives

Governor Snyder’s and the other politicians attack on the Michigan’s Film Incentive Program has already cost the state millions of dollars and uncountable number of jobs. They claim the incentive program drains money from the state, while giving very little back. Not only do the independent studies prove this wrong, but so does common sense.

The Incentive Program returns 36-42% of what the Production Company spends within Michigan. . Independent accounting firms proved that the film industry spent over 600 million dollars of new money in the state of Michigan. The incentive program for the same period of time paid out a 100 million. However, the key phase is “new money.” Money that would have been spent in another state came to Michigan. Taxes that would have been paid to another state were paid to Michigan. The same could be said for jobs, fees, and positive promotions, which gave the state international exposure not only to film fans, but also to foreign investors who were looking for a new market.

The film and television industry is very fluid. Unlike manufacturing, retail, or most businesses, it doesn’t need to build a large infrastructure to in order to do business. It is capable of using existing structures as locations by temporary modifying them to meet their needs or by using larger spaces to create short-term sets. In doing so it pays location fees to cities, businesses, and individuals. It hires locally for services and products. In addition, to the union staff, it hires local people to play extras and to work non-union positions, thereby opening the door to new careers both in front of and behind the cameras.

If however, a production company decides to set down roots by establishing a studio, they bring with them not only the gypsy jobs of cast and crew, but also hundreds of support jobs. Whether it be in the office, transportation, promotions, catering, maintenance, or security, nearly every studio hires its support staff locally.

Studios not only bring in film work, but it opens the door for other projects such as commercials, music videos, video games, and television series. All of which increases the demand for local services and staff, while increasing the individual and business tax base. Whether the income is local, national, or international, studios also pays taxes on their profits to their home state.

When people have good paying jobs the demand on pubic social service lessons. Instead of being a drain on the state, they not only pay taxes, but they also have the money to pay for goods and services, which in turn creates new jobs and tax revenue. This positive financial cycle financially benefits the state.

With this win-win financial scenario why would Snyder and other politicians attack a program that is bringing new money and jobs into the state. It is very simple. New money and good jobs challenges the status quo. Established businesses do not want to compete for good employees by having to pay a living wage and benefits. In addition, Snyder and his old boys club are out to break the back of the unions. Unions fight for workers to have safe working conditions, a living wage and benefits. They take away greedy CEO’s power to use, abuse and lose employees at will. Collective bargaining strengthens the work force, which in turn strengthens the state’s economy.

If Snyder’s changes to the Film Incentive program are allowed to stand, not only will it cost Michigan hundreds of millions of dollars and thousands of jobs, but its reputation as well. The industry was given five years to become self sustaining and profitable. Snyder is trying to change the terms after two. The bait and switch has not gone unnoticed by the rest of the country and the world. No Corporation or individual will invest long term in a state, which is not as good as its word.

It is time to tell Governor Snyder and those who stand with him keep their hands off the Film Incentive Program. In order for Michigan to regain prosperity, it needs new jobs that come from new money. It also needs to reestablish its reputation as a state, which stands behind its word. As citizens, it is time to remind the elected politicians that they work for us, not the Corporate CEOs by calling and demanding that the film incentives be preserved.

Rock and Load Founder Dan Shafer

Dan became lead vocalist for the group Mercenary on Portrait Records. Here he worked with Rusty Daddio of Ronnie James Dio and Richie Blackmore. Dan’s experience as a premier vocalist continued throughout the 1980s with stints as lead vocalist for the group Orphan on Polygram Records and singer/songwriter with the group Face the Music, working with Jerry Love at Paramount/Famous Music. Dan’s vocal talents soon began to be sought out for commercial work and in the early 1990s Dan’s list of successful commercial work began. This list includes Seagram Wine Cooler for HB&B, working with producer Cheryl Smith, Transformers (Robots in Disguise), Space Marines from Aliens III, and hundreds of television/radio commercials including Revlon, Pizza Hut, Tetley Tea, AT&T, Matchbox, and BC Powder. During this time Dan also started producing vocals, arranging and executing background vocals for a variety of producers and artists, also doing voice-over work for SEM&M in New York City.

In 1996 Dan’s career expanded. After relocating to Nashville, Tennessee he started producing, arranging and executing solo vocals including background vocals for Chuck Howard, Byron Gallimore, Stuart Harris, and John Berry. His roots as a vocalist still continued working with Bucket Colwell of Bad Company, singing with the group Public Witness and on a host of jingles for Coors Lite, BC Powder in Nashville, Chicago and New York City.

In 1998, Dan started a production/development company with the goal of helping artists and/or producers not only with tracks, but focusing on Vocal Production . Dan produced, arranged and wrote seven songs on the Salt record *Satisfied“. The single "Get Back" went to 13 R&R charts Dec 2001, and the single "Satisfied" went to 20.

From the late 1960s through the early 80s Ray did magazine and newspaper writing, photography and cartooning, and was editorial cartoonist for the Spring Lake (NC) News. He has done magazine cover art and photography and cartoons for publications such as Ebony, Essence, and Asia Magazine. Ray has written on everything from cultural history to travel to theatrical reviews.

His first book length work was a leadership book, “Things I Learned from My Grandmother About Leadership and Life,” published in 2008. This was followed in 2009 by “Taking Charge: Effective Leadership for the Twenty-first Century.” In 2009, he published an e-novel, “Color Me Dead,” a mystery featuring DC-based private investigator, Al Pennyback. Blue Bloods: Where was Tom Selleck?

Blue Blood led CBS to rating victory on Friday night. But in spite of its success, I kept wondering where Tom Selleck was. An actor who looked very much like him appeared occasionally on the screen, but the vibrant, multi-dimensional actor that I have always enjoyed failed to make an appearance.

Blue Bloods is the story of a New York family, who has a multi-generational tradition of service in the police department. Selleck plays the current Police Commissioner, whose youngest son has just joined his brothers as the newest rookie. With a conspiracy within the police department and a secret society, Blue Bloods implied that the youngest son will be investigating his family, including his father. The problem is that no one cares. None of the family members are likeable or interesting.

Tom Selleck always gives a diamond performance. Even characters who would normally be one dimensional, he has been able to breathe life into, giving them depth with humor, character and likeability. Whether a good guy as in Magnum or the not-so-much of the white hat with the dark character Jesse Stone, Selleck’s eyes were always lit with his inner passion. As Frank Reagan, Selleck’s eyes were lifeless. In fact, the character was a little more than a prop for the younger characters as was Len Cariou’s. Part of me kept waiting for the real Selleck to make an appearance. Sadly, he never did arrive.

Over all the show reminded me of out of sync gears, where the teeth failed to properly work in tandem. Or better said a choir that was singing the same song, but the individual singers fail to listen to each other. The detective son was simply unlikable. His blaming his bad behavior on his military experience just made me dislike him even more. It was just one more stereotype those who serve simply don’t need. The daughter and the youngest son had no personality. I would like to comment on Cariou character, but he wasn’t given enough air time for me to comment beyond Cariou is normally first rate.

To be honest, I was hoping Blue Bloods would be a dog simply because I wanted Selleck to portray Deek in my military series, Operation Home Base. After hearing the rumors of trouble on the set, I held out a glimmer of hope. But I was realistic enough to start looking elsewhere to cast the role. Before watching Blue Bloods, I didn’t think Selleck had a bad performance in him. He was never just a pretty face, but a talented professional who has always brought passion and life to his work. Do I still want him to play Deek? You-betcha in a heart beat. Will I watch Blue Bloods again? No. There isn’t anything in the show interesting enough for me to spend the hour.New

Deek Williams: A Character Profile

When Deek agreed to head Operation Home Base, he expected to die. He thought Walter would have him killed to cover up the past or that Martin would finally get his revenge. Either way the ghosts in his head would finally be silent. Instead, Deek found what he had been seeking his entire life--a family.

To provide for his Mother and younger brother after his father‘s death, Deek enlisted in the Marines. Deek was deployed to Vietnam in the summer of 1966. Through a series of twists of fate and his own brash nature, he found himself recruited into a special ops team, which closely worked with the Montagnard and the Vietnamese Army. Deeply embedded, he not only lost track of the world, but himself. Forced into life or death situations, he made snap decisions that at the time were reasonable and necessary.

Five years later, he reemerged from his assignment and was immediately air lifted out. His records were sealed, except to those with the highest security clearance. Yet, part of him never left the jungle. He returned to the world only to find that it had gone on without him. His mother had remarried. Her new husband and step-daughters filled her life with happiness. His brother Stephen had gone to Canada to escape the draft and made a new life. They no longer had room for him.

He wandered aimlessly until General Walter Hummel found him and recruited him for an off the books black ops team. Walter offered him a place in the world where he was not only wanted, but also desperately needed.. It wasn’t what Deek wanted, but he couldn’t see any alternatives. Boxing up his regret and guilt, he buried it away along with all his hopes and dreams. A falsified death certificate ended Deek’s old life and began his new life. Emotionally numb, Deek followed orders. He went and did what he was told.

Charming one minute, deadly the next, Deek is able to accomplish the seemingly impossible. A permanent bachelor, he has many love interests but no attachments. He sees the big picture when it comes to his career and the military, but he refuses to get caught up in the messiness of intra-personal relationships. The "companions" who warm his bed at night are never there to see the dawn. He is a man of mystery and many contradictions. Likeable, yet frequently frightening, he gets the jobs done efficiently and effectively. In the shadows of espionage and off the books world politics, he becomes a legend to be respected, yet feared.

No matter how far or fast he ran, the ghosts of the past were never far behind. They nipped at his conscience and haunted his dreams. Decades later, a slight hesitation on his part caused a high priority target to escape. His team remedied the situation, but they no longer trusted him. Deek returned home, expecting one of them to appear and take out the liability.

Instead retired General Walter Hummel appeared on his doorstep with another offer. Confused, Deek listened. He liked the concept behind Operation Home Base. He wondered how different his life would have been if there had been such an organization to catch him when he first returned from Nam. He agreed to take the job on the condition that he would have the freedom to expand the scope of OHB. He wanted to give the disenfranchised veterans more than basic emotional and material support. He envisioned an organization that provided not only the basic needs, but legal protection and support from those who had survived the journey back home. He couldn’t do it himself, but he knew those who could.

Deek met Randi Cullen when she was looking for her father, Colonel Andrew Cullen. Through his connections, he found Cullen. What he learned Randi didn’t need to know. Instead, he shared only the on the books honors of the Colonel. Randi told him that she knew there was more, but she trusted him enough to accept what he gave her. Randi followed her step-father’s path and moved on to law school, becoming one of Delaware’s fast rising legal stars. A legal situation once again brought them together. The friendship blossomed into a relationship that Deek couldn’t emotionally handle. He left, yet he continually returned to her throughout the years simply because he couldn’t stay away.

Coming from a military family that could trace its roots back to the Civil War, Debra Anne Lee knew how to translate civilian intoa language the military could understand. She came to Deek’s attention when she used family connections to helped Seaman Gary Mayor get leave from his sub and return home in time to say good-bye to the grandmother who raised him.

Deek met Master Sergeant Stella Garcia in a Washington DC bar. Angry at the world and her disability, Stella was out to leave rubble in her wake. Deek was able to prevent her from killing the local LEO. With Randi’s help, he was able to the charges thrown out. Stella got off, but she wasn’t saved. She went back to her much hated desk job and self-destructive behavior. Deek just couldn’t let her go. In her eyes, he saw himself in the 1970’s. Behind her back, Deek contacted Stella’s family. He made arrangements with the Tribal Elders for her to go to back to the reservation for the warrior healing ceremony. Kidnapping her, Deek took her back to the Rez. Through Walter, Deek made the UA on her record disappear. Stella returned to duty with a new purpose. She couldn’t have saved those in her unit, but she could speak for those who paid the ultimate price and support their families as a Mortuary Officer.

It wasn’t until after he had his team on the way to Dover that Deek learned Martin Flying Crow was one of the founding members of OHB. Caught between a rock and a hard place, Deek accepted that his past had caught up with him. He was good with it. Either Walter or Martin would silence the ghosts and send him onto whatever waited for him on the other side. However, instead of death, Deek found a new beginning and new reasons to want to stay alive.

Originally written for Tom Selleck, the executive producer are now considering other possibilities for the role.

Udo Stadtsbuchler: Interview with psychotherapist and cancer survivor

Until You Walk the Path, You Don’t Know Where it Goes is proud to host psychotherapist and cancer survivor Udo Stadtsbuchler on August 15 at 5 pm eastern. Stadtsbuchler will be talking about the mind-body connection and behavioral medicine.

Udo Stadtsbuchler is Austrian, happily married and residing in Spain. He is a psychotherapist, but recently retired after a very long and successful career, which took him to South Africa and other parts of southern Africa where he spent much of his life.
1995 he went to Switzerland and two years later to England, but missing the African sunshine he chose the next best thing and settled with his wife on the Costa del Sol in Spain.

Professionally Udo combines humanistic psychotherapy with other therapies such as neuro and psycholinguistics, and various energy therapies. He is a great believer in the power of thought and mind. He is also a keen advocate of psychoneuroimmunology (PNI), previously known as behavioral medicine.

In his practice Udo dealt with a wide range of conditions and issues; from mental and anxiety disorders to discordant relationships, and from self development to anger management. He developed his own therapy called Applied Body and Mind Dynamics (ABMD).

Over the past 10 years Udo studied and involved himself in the phenomenon of happiness; the philosophies, psychology and the biology of it. Happiness became to him the highest value feeling and the ultimate good. He began teaching it and recently published his first book, Happiness Discovered, the sum total of all his findings and insights in this subject.

A few months ago Udo was diagnosed with cancer for the second time in his life. The first time – six years ago - one of his kidneys had to be removed. This time Udo resolved to use his own powers, diet and the use of supplements to master this challenge. On August 25 he will see the oncologist to hear how successful he was so far. His short term goal is to halt the progress of the illness; long term he plans to be cured.

He has spent most of his life as a seeker to try to find himself and enhance his spiritual development. He is a very interested in all forms of religion and spirituality. Until You Walk the Path, You Don’t Know Where it Goes will be hosting author Ambassador Charles Ray on August 1 at 5 pm eastern.

Charles Ray was bitten by the writing bug in his teens when he won a short story contest sponsored by a national Sunday school magazine. As a young soldier in Germany in the early 60s, he frequently contributed poetry to the Stars and Stripes newspaper.
From the late 1960s through the early 80s Ray did magazine and newspaper writing, photography and cartooning, and was editorial cartoonist for the Spring Lake (NC) News. He has done magazine cover art and photography and cartoons for publications such as Ebony, Essence, and Asia Magazine. Ray has written on everything from cultural history to travel to theatrical reviews.

His first book length work was a leadership book, “Things I Learned from My Grandmother About Leadership and Life,” published in 2008. This was followed in 2009 by “Taking Charge: Effective Leadership for the Twenty-first Century.” In 2009, he published an e-novel, “Color Me Dead,” a mystery featuring DC-based private investigator, Al Pennyback. He has since published “Deadline” and “Memorial to the Dead,” in the Al Pennyback series. These books are at Lebrary.com.

His recent book, “Angel on His Shoulder,” available at amazon.com in paperback and lebrary.com as an e-book, is a fantasy/humor book about Winston Nesbitt, a 40-year-old loser whose grandmother comes back to life as a twelve-inch tall impish spirit who complicates his boring life.

The Story "Day with The President"

I was greeted at the door after finally being allowed to pass through the gate - needing to give verification of who I was and why I was there.

After being searched personally as well as all my makeup cases a Secret Service Agent escorted me to a very small room in which I was to do the Presidents makeup. I asked about pictures or autographs and was told I could take a picture of the back portion of Airforce 1 only! After starting to set up my products, the producer of NBC universal asked me to pack up again and go with him to the NBC rolling studio for makeup on Chuck Todd first. There were at least 20 Secret Service, State Police and/or marine personnel guarding the area. After completing Mr. Todd's makeup I returned to my small room.

After returning from Holland in the helicopter, the president was escorted in to see me. I was instructed to stay in the room as he arrived and not to come into the hallway. He shook my hand and said it was nice to meet me then sat down in my directors chair. After offering him a bottle of water and asking if there were any special instructions or allergies I needed to be aware of, I started cleaning off his face.
He inquired as to whether I did this full time and I said "yes I am because of our film tax incentives I do, and it has given me an opportunity to work with a number of great celebrities such as himself." He asked " who were some of them?" I named Neil Cavouto, Joan London, 50 Cent, and Lee Majors. To that, he said "I remember Lee Majors, the Six Million Dollar Man! He was on TV back when I was about 10!"

About that time I finished up with his powder and he asked if I minded staying for a bit while they did the interview just in case he needed a touchup? I stayed in my room until he was about to board Airforce 1 again, then was able to come out and watch him leave.

I was then escorted outside again and thanked many times over for coming.

Star Entertainment is also looking for any food venues who can provide food and drinks periodically as part of their schedule. Most importantly we are looking for a great camera and lightening person who has their own equipment.

Record Breaking First Day Ticket Sales

TRAVERSE CITY, MI (July 21, 2010) ¬ Now in its sixth year, the Traverse City Film Festival has announced a record-breaking 30,000 tickets on the first day of ticket sales, selling out 17 screenings within minutes of the tickets going on sale online to the Friends of the Film Festival. One of the great things about the Traverse City Film Festival is the chance for everyone to meet, discuss and learn about movies with the many incredible directors, producers and actors who come to TC for this one week each year. This year the festival will run from July 27-August 1, 2010.
And this year we have some fantastic opportunities for you to participate with our free panels, our expanded TCFF Film School and our new TC Film Forum in the Park. We'll have a moderator and often the filmmaker will be present. It's free, it's outdoors, we'll have refreshments (and there will be free live musical performances before and after the discussion sessions, from noon to 7 pm each day) and it'll be a great way to meet all the interesting people who've come here from across the country to watch movies. We think this will a very cool way to spend an hour and take a break from all the movie-watching. Think of this as a movielovers "be-in." Be there! I will!

Several people have commented that they simple can’t envision how two shows as vastly diverse as MASH and Little House on the Prairie could be combined into one show. My answer--it was very simple. I just had to think outside the box and look at the core of both shows. MASH dealt with the emotional and physical issues arising from war. Little House was about family and community. Operation Home base combines the two premises by exploring the emotional, psychological and physical effects of war with the conflicts and misunderstandings that are frequently connected to the civilian world.

Premiering on September 17, 1972 and ending on February 28, 1983, MASH spanned 251 episodes. Until recently the final show held the title of the most watch episode of all time. Unique for its time, MASH was a front runner in TV programming. Considered a medical drama and a black comedy, the producers and writers chose to do the research and bring a realism into the show that had never been tried in a fictional venue. They had the courage to tell the truth about war and show how it affected those who serve. The simple fact is that war changes not only the landscape of a country, but the very soul of everyone that it touches.

The alcohol, the dark humor, and practical jokes were the most obvious of the coping mechanism the characters used to emotionally and psychologically survive. Radar had his teddy bear. Klinger dressed up like a woman. Hawkeye and Trapper John chased women, played practical jokes, and played golf. BJ and Sherman Potter focused on family. By seeking comfort from men, who weren’t always available, Margaret both sought and hid from love. Charles found refuge in music. They did what was necessary to cope with the death and destruction that surrounded them daily.

As in real life, sometimes it worked--sometimes it didn’t. Margaret getting married to someone else, caused Frank to have a breakdown. He was sent home. Hawkeye lost control after a mother smothered her crying child to keep the enemy from discovering them; instead of being sent home, he was hospitalized, treated and returned to the 4077. Throughout the run of the show, other characters became mentally unstable, but in each instance the topic was treated realistically and with great sensitivity.. From self inflicted wounds to shell shocked, the incoming wounded, special guests to the 4077 and the regulars revealed how the trauma of war has unexpected consequences.

MASH brought home the simple fact that sometimes good people don’t go home and even when they do, they are never the same. When Henry Blake died, it wasn’t just the characters who mourned his loss. The viewers also lost a beloved family member. Henry’s death cascade off the screen into the homes of the viewers. It reflected something Henry shared with Hawkeye--There are two rules. good men die in war.
and doctors can’t change rule number one. Although, other characters died, Henry’s death had more impact. Like in real life, it was totally unexpected.

Operation Home Base picks up where MASH left off. The characters of MASH became a family because of their shared experience and their desire to help. This is the foundation that OHB is built on. It shows how war permanently changes both those who serve and those who love them. Even though, military personnel changed location, it doesn’t necessarily mean they come home or that they have a home to come back to.
Not only do military personnel change, but so do their family members. OHB deals with the loneliness and fear of those who are left behind. When a family member is deployed, the others have to fill in that void. Not only are there practical issues like home repair, child care and financial concerns, but the emotional impact can be even more challenging on relationships. Spouse become lonely. Children grow up and away; sometimes, they resent the absent parent. Everyone involved changes and adapts to the new circumstances. When the family member returns, the challenge is to blend the old with the new.

It is What it is--A Vietnam nurse buried the trauma of her last days in country. When her grandson is killed in the sandbox, the old memories resurface and she is forced to remember what happened when she was evacuated.

Little Johnny Isn’t Little Johnny any More--Deek sees a friend from Nam that he thought was long dead. It forces him to not only deal with his own survivor’s guilt, but also with what he had to do to survive.

Right to Believe--New to the base, Sergeant Major Horse finds discrepancies in the billing of a food supplier. However, Horse is killed before he can investigate further. His tribal Elders and his family contact Stella when the base commander attempts to cover up the murder. Religious bigotry complicates the investigation when the base Chaplin steals the body in order to circumvent Horse’s religious practice.

Homeland--Airman First Class Steve O’Connell is deployed. Before he leaves, he arranges for the mortgage to automatically be paid electronically. The bank claims the deposits were never made and forecloses. The bank president disregards the Soldiers and Sailors Act, which legally protects those who have been deployed. Sheriff ignores proof of fraud by the bank and attempts to force the family to leave. The O’Connells with help of friends defend their home.

Dunk Tank--The killing of a Marine’s therapy dog sparks a fundraising campaign, which rapidly becomes a wild and crazy a free for all. While Special Agent Simon Behan investigates the death of the dog, the OHB team competes against military personnel and other civilians for cheesy prizes as way to raise money to help homeless dogs become helpmate for veterans dealing with PTSD. This storyline could easily be carried back over into real life

Listed as a western, Little House on the Prairie was more about family and community than a shoot’um up. Airing from September 11, 1974, to May 10, 1982., Little House primarily focused on the financial, medical and social issues, which challenged Ingalls family.

As much as the Ingalls’ home was filled with love, so was their life is filled with challenges. Several time Charles was forced to leave the family in order to find work during financially challenging times. When Mary become blind, she and her family had to cope with the physical aspects of her disability along with the emotional and psychological changes that came with it. When her baby brother died, Laura felt responsible. She went looking for God so she exchange places in heaven with him. The deaths, births, adoption and marriages changed the family dynamic as well as each individual member. How they coped revealed who they were.

Although the show was family oriented, it did reveal how bigotry and ignorance can be found in the least likely places. By dealing openly and honestly, with the topics of death, disability, bigotry and loss, Little House proved that a family and community is only as strong as its weakest member. In doing so, it mirrored real life back to the viewers.

Not only within the storylines, but within the characters themselves, OHB will be dealing with the same kind of family hardships and community challenges. It will address the emotional, physical, financial as well as many more of the life tests that those in and out of the military face every day. From the loneliness of missing a loved one to dealing with their return, military families live with uncertainty and the potential loss every day.

Half Potawatomi half Mexican, Master Sergeant Stella Garcia is woman in her late 30’s who planned to be a career soldier. However, the IED, which took her left leg, ended her active field duty. The sole survivor of the three vehicle convoy, she suffered from PTSD and depression. Emotionally, she couldn’t find the reason for her surviving when rest of her buddies were killed. Using alcohol and sex to numb the pain, she walked through life unable to feel anything. She settled into her new desk job, yet her dreams were haunted by the ghosts of her unit and the others. They asked her why she ran away from her duty--why she allowed their deaths to be in vain. Instead of seeking aid, she hides deeper within the bottle. It was only after her Tribal Elders helped heal her in ceremony that she was able to find a new purpose in life.

In her early twenties, Debra Ann Lee is a southern bell who grew up with seven older brothers most of whom join the military. A martial arts expert in her own right, she is proud of her family heritage that can be traced back to the civil war. Her mother used to say that Debra Anne walked where fools and angels fear to tread and was kicked out for being a smart ass. Having more moxie and intelligence than common sense, she is willing to take on situations and people that most people run away from. Using the immortality of youth as a shield as well as her passion and natural curiosity, she cons, charms, or connives her way to achieving her goals. Debra has only one fear--losing her husband. Newlywed at the time he was deployed overseas, Debra must cope with the fear and loneliness of the uncertainty of her soul mate being in the military.

OHB combines the issues of war with the challenges of family and community as it shows the good, bad and the ugly of military life. It will address the misunderstandings and the bigotries that arise between civilians and the military. But more importantly it will tells the stories of those who serve in a way that will not only entertain, but create a bridge of understanding and compassion.

Age Diversity in Television

Recently it was pointed out to me that I have been focusing on the older characters of Operation Home Base to the exclusion of the rest of the characters as a way of promoting the show to investors and sponsor. Instead of furthering my cause, it has diminished my chances of finding support in the entertainment industry.

Investors, sponsors, and networks’ consider those between 18-35 to be the prime demographic age group. They believe that in order to have hit show, whether it be television or film, this demographic needs to be courted by featuring characters from this age bracket. I, on the other hand, believe there is intelligent life out there, who will be attracted not by the age of the characters, but by the depth of the personality of the characters, complexity of the storylines and the quality of the production.

Although the older characters are very important to the show, they are only the support pillars for the storylines. OHB has always been based on diversity of age, gender and culture. The characters ages range from 7 to 70. Being the youngest in the regular cast, Tessa and Izzy are children, who are connected to the military families. Still children, they have learned how to live and function in the world of adults. Together, they learn how to be children. Walter Hummel is the oldest of the regular cast. At 71 years, he has survived his own military career and has retired into civilian life. His experiences go back to the Korean War as well as many of the subsequent conflicts. These are the bookends; most of the remaining characters’ ages fall between them.

The older characters are important simply because they are the pillars of the show. In order to fully understand how deeply the emotional traumas cut into a person’s soul, you have to have lived and survived it.. It is through them at that younger staff members will learn how to help others. It is this reason I focused on introducing them first. Without Walter, Deek, Martin, Elaine, Lorelei, and Michael, the OHB would have no credibility. In addition, there will be semi-regulars and guest stars, who are also of an age; they will reflect real life and keep the show honest. It is their experience, wisdom and personal challenges that create the healing atmosphere that the rest will build from.

The 18-35 age group will be well represent as regular cast, semi-regulars and guests. However, these characters will not just be chip beef--chippies in bikinis and beef cake. Each will have depth and character, which make them individuals with personal challenges, desires, and faults. No one will be perfect. No one will be completely evil. What they will be are real people that viewers of all ages will be able to identify with as family members, friends, and the person they see in the mirror.

Master Sergeant Stella Garcia is OHB’s Casualty/mortuary officer. As the Red Cross Liaison, Debra Anne would be assisting family members in communicating with military personnel through official channels. In her mid to late 20’s, she is a newly wed, whose husband was deployed shortly after their wedding. She will show how military families survive the separation both as a professional and a wife, who never knows when or if her soul mate will be coming home.

Randi Cullen is the thirty-something legal advocate. She grew up as Marine brat until her mother divorced her father early in her childhood. Eventually her mother remarried and moved across country, taking Randi and her brothers away from the military way of life Although both of her older brothers enlisted right out of high school, Cullen both loved and hated the military. She loved the discipline and the service, yet she blamed it for the loss of her father. Unlike her brothers, she followed her step-father’s example by becoming a top litigator before she reached her 30th birthday. However, she never forgot her birth father. She met Deek while searching for him. They became close friends, who tried to take the relationship to the next level.

In her early 20’s, Denise O’Dell is a third year law student, who started as a volunteer with OHB as a receptionist/gopher. As a regular member of the cast, she will help Randi deal with legal issues and help keep the office organized. A bright, intelligent, and ambitious woman of African-American decent, she works hard to make a difference. Although she doesn’t have any direct connection to the military, she has chosen to step up to help simply because she cares and she sees the need.

Special Agent Simon Behan is also African-American. He will be a reoccurring character.. In his early 30’s, he has a proud family man. Coming from a law enforcement heritage, Behan was recruited by NCIS after he help clear a Marine of murder charges. By speaking the truth, he broke the Blue code and put himself at risk. His choice not only put him at odds with his co-workers, but with his own family.

In his mid twenties, Shawn Michael Knox is Deek’s hand picked assistant, who frequently disappears without explanation. Self assured, Knox diffuses personal questions with humor. A combination of computer geek and profiler, his charming personality and sex appeal gets him where he needs to be and what he needs to have. Although he is sexually desirable, he appeal comes from his good heart, quick wit, and the courage, which comes from his soul. His secrets and his inability to give a straight answer about his past will keep him a mystery to both the other characters and the viewer for the first two seasons.

Family members and people who come to OHB for help will also fall into the younger age group. Stella and Debra Anne both have siblings who will visit on occasion. Lorelei’s children are in their twenties and early thirties. Elaine’s daughter, Amanda will be a very important reoccurring character. In her late twenties, she is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force. As a character, she plays an important role in understanding not only women who serve, but she will show how military personnel find the balance between duty and caring for their children. Most military personnel and their families that will need OHB’s help will be in their late teens and twenties. Although most will appear as guest stars on the show, they will add age and ethic diversity.

Operation Home Base is far from being an old folks show. In reality, it will actually portray the diversity and challenges of life, becoming the first true family of man drama since MASH.

Operation Home Base Red Cross Liaison: Debra Anne Lee

Being the youngest member of the OHB staff, Debra Anne Lee is more than capable of holding her own not only with the rest of the staff, but also military personnel from the lowest to the highest ranked. When her father’s friend, Deek, asked her to join OHB’s staff as the Red Cross Liaison, she jumped at the chance to move closer to her fiancée, Daniel Walker.

Growing up with seven older brothers most of whom join the military, Debra Anne learned early in life how to hold her own. Although she grew up in a military family and would marry military, Debra Anne chose a civilian career as a Social Worker. Earning her Masters in Social Work with minors in psychology and grief therapy, her goal was to work with abused and neglected children. She quickly found that working within the state’s system her temperament was more of a liability than an asset. Her straight forward, shoot from the hip nature quickly alienated her supervisors, co-workers and the legal system. She simply didn’t understand the politics involved, nor was she willing to play their games. If she saw a problem, she simply fixed it or found someone who could.

As the Red Cross Liaison, Debra Anne would be assisting family members in communicating with military personnel through official channels. Using established avenues, the Liaison speeds up the verification process, thereby helping the messages arrive in a timely fashion. In addition, she helps arrange transportation across country for family members whose loved ones have been injured and for military personnel during times of family crisis. In addition to the messages, as a grief councilor she would be working very closely with Martin and Stella, helping family members and military personnel deal with combat injuries and death issues.

Deek invited her to meet the founders of OHB. Leaving, home she was well aware that if they turned Walter’s offer, she would have quit her job for nothing. She didn’t care. If they did, she was determined to change their minds. When her plane touched down in Dover, she was surprised to find Daniel waiting for her on the tarmack. She had intended to surprise him. Immediately, he kneeled before her and asked her to marry him. Whether she got the job or not, he didn’t want her to leave. If Deek hadn’t told him that she hadn’t been coming to him, he would have gone to her. He had received his orders to ship out to the Sandbox. Debra Anne said yes. They were married in a civil ceremony a few days later.

As a character, Debra Anne will not only be a valued member of the OHB team, but she will also show how the separation affects the family members. Through her, the viewers will experience the loneliness and fear that loved ones live with every day. Each time Stella receives the death and injured lists, Debra Anne will fear Daniel’s name will be on it. She will be reminded with every time other families faces a loss that next time it could be Daniel, her brothers or a friend. The viewers will be able to see how she copes with the loneliness as she writes letters to him and reads the letters he sends to her. Theirs is a love story of two soul mates who found each other only to be separated by the war. They are together in spirit, yet physically separated. Their letters, phone calls and emails will reflect their love and friendship, but what isn’t said will be more important than what is.

This role is going to challenge for a twenty-something the actress to reach deep down inside to not only love with her whole heart, but to have the courage to face each day with the knowledge she could lose him. She will have to be strong enough to walk the emotional tightrope between sharing the feelings and having pity parties.

Remembering Days of Our Lives

I started writing The Ghost as a protest to the bad writing. It became so popular that I not only kept it going but expanded it to fit the multi-plot format of soap operas. In the beginning, the format is an old film format. However, later in the story that is corrected.

Eugene G. Lipov, MD is a board certified in Anesthesiology as well as Interventional Pain Management. He has been an authority in pain management for over 20 years. A Message to Veterans Organizations

Over the past few months, I have contacted many veterans organization to gain their support for my new military series, Operation Home Base. Although they liked the premise and the entertainment value of OHB, most felt that the conspiracy would reflect badly on their organization and the military in general. I am writing this open letter to them clarify my intentions and goals.

Operation Home Base is not a documentary or a reality show. A documentary couldn’t possibly tell the heart stories of those who serve. They are great at giving facts and information, but it takes time for the viewer to see beyond the surface and to care about the characters. When Henry Blake died on MASH, everyone mourned his loss much more than the soldiers that came through the 4077 as patients. It was not that the viewers didn’t care about the soldiers, they just got to know and love Henry. The members of Operation Home Base--Deek, Martin, Walter, Randi, Elaine and the rest will be the continuity that the audience will be able to relate to as family members, friends or the person they see in the mirror; because of that simple fact, they will care about what happens to them just a little more. And like with Henry, when one of them is injured, it will affect them on a deeper level. Although OHB will be dealing with real issues and situations, it is not a Reality Show. Reality shows have very little to do with reality; I see them as exploitive of people and situations. OHB is a scripted show that is first and foremost about people and the human condition. I know where the show is going and how I’m going to get it there.

Although the conspiracy and the characters of OHB organization are fictional, the stories they will be dealing with are based on real life situations. Unless a vet or active duty military personnel does something really naughty, their stories don’t make the front page. Although I will also be using some of those, most vets and military stories don’t make the news at all and if they do, it’s somewhere on the back pages. In real life, a Marine’s therapy dog was killed, family members did get their letters back marked “Returned to sender. Deceased, family homes are being illegally foreclosed; it has all happened and so much more. OHB will call attention to these kinds of stories.

I will also be using history. WWII, Korea, and Vietnam--they all have stories that need to be told. Some of them won’t be so nice to hear. But the healing has to start somewhere. So many vets came back and just buried what happened. But no matter how deeply they dug or how much denial they dumped on top of it, those experiences don’t just disappear or heal themselves. I would like to help the healing process by lancing those boils. In order for there to be healing, there has to be forgiveness not only of others, but the vets need to forgive themselves. War brings out the ugliness in life and in people. When you live on the edge, sometimes pieces of the soul get cut off. It is time for those pieces to come back so that they can become whole again.

The conspiracy is the hook to get people to come back week to week. I’m very old school. Not only will the characters have personalities, but the actors who portray them will have the maturity to understand the times, the people and why the healing process sometimes takes time. Until you have lived a little life, there is no way you can bring that kind of wisdom to the table. But OHB is swimming in the deep end of the pool. The characters have issues. They are damaged on many levels, but in spite of all their pain, they still are willing to help others heal even if they can’t help themselves. No matter how talented the actor, a twenty-something doesn’t have the chops or experience to be credible. So many of the new shows are what I call chip beef--chippies in bikinis and beef cake; they look good but the characters aren’t written with depth and the stories are only excuses to show off bare skin.

I’m also a big fan of cliffhangers. Every episode and each season will end with one. The end of the first season will make who shot JR seem tame with more than one question left hanging. It is combination of caring about the characters and this tension that will not only keep the viewers coming back, but it will make it a must see hit.

Several of the representatives that I talked to were afraid that the show would spill over on to their organization. I hope it will. The more people understand the need, the more likely they are to help the organizations who step up to the plate. The episode about the therapy dog’s death will lead to a fundraiser on the show that could be carried over into real life. It will also raise awareness of how therapy dogs help those with PTSD, which in turn will help those who need dogs get them and homeless dogs find homes. It is a win-win situation. Another storyline will talk about how military families can’t make financial ends meet; it is a situation that civilian families are also unfortunately challenged with. OHB will inspire both to think outside the box to find solutions. But more importantly, OHB shows the brother and sisterhood of the those who serve. When push come to shove, all branches of service and their family members circle the wagons to protect their own during times of hardship and loss. I want to show that.

Operation Home Base will not only be great entertainment, but it will also share the stories and challenges of what it means to live and love military.

Interview with the Creator of the Newest Military TV Series

Recently, I had the opportunity to talk to writer Theresa Chaze about her new military series, Operation Home Base, and her other upcoming projects.

Stephen: I’ve read your proposal, pilot and the first season. You have been describing Operation Home Base as the newest military series, yet most of the stories are civilian based.

Theresa: First and foremost, OHB is about people. Although, I decided focus on military personnel, vets and their dependants, civilians also faces the same issues. I know the military and I care. I never really had the discipline to enlist myself, but I have a great deal of respect for those who do put their lives on their line. Like so many people, I never really considered what the families go through when their loved ones are deployed. Those who have loved ones who serve pull double duty with one foot in both military and civilian worlds.

Stephen: What inspired you to create OHB?

Theresa: A very good friend of mine used to volunteer for the Red Cross. The stories I heard planted the idea. But passing messages wasn’t active enough to create an hour drama. After doing research, I found several organizations who were helping military families, including one called Operation Homefront.

Stephen: From where do your your story lines come?

Theresa: From the back pages of newspapers. Unless a vet or military personnel does something really naughty, their stories don’t make the front page. I will also be using history. WWII, Korea, and Vietnam--they all have stories that need to be told. Some of them won’t be so nice to hear. But the healing has to start somewhere. So many vets came back and just buried what happened. But no matter how deeply they dug or how much denial they dumped on top of it, those experiences don’t just disappear or heal themselves.

Stephen: Can you give a few more examples from the first season?

Theresa: A Marines therapy dog was killed by two people just for the hell of it. His story will not only raise awareness about therapy dogs, but it is also the basis of a fund raiser on the show that I would really like to see blend into real life.

Someone in the had intercepted letters sent to military personnel, serving over seas, and wrote “Returned to sender. Deceased.“ Can you imagine what it felt like for the friends and family members to get their letters back? The Post Office traced the letters back to one of their hubs. Toward the end of the first season, this real life event will become Michael’s obsession.

Stephen: How does OHB compare with other dramas?

Theresa: I looked to the most successful dramas as my models: MASH, Medical Center, NCIS, Criminal Minds, Little House on the Prairie, The Waltons, The CSIs. I took the best pieces of all of them, added in real life and mixed well.

Stephen: I'm surprised to hear you list Little House and The Waltons.

Theresa: Both shows were about family. That is the foundation OHB is build on. Not only the families of vets and military personnel, but the brother and sisterhood of the military. The Marines say Semper Fi, but the concept applies to all the branches as well as to service in general. The Army vs. Navy game might have them fighting on the playing field, but when push comes to shove there is only one team--The United States.

Stephen: Which is your favorite character?

Theresa: I love them all, but I have a special fondness for Walter. He is going to be a lot like JR; the viewers will love to hate him. The thing about Walter is that he is all about family and country. Everything he does is motivated by those two things. It is the blind spot that others will use against him. He is the apex of the conspiracy or so it will seem, but even Walter doesn’t know who he is actually working for. But that is further down the road than I would like to talk about.

Stephen: I’ve noticed that most of your cast choices are older. Why?

Theresa: The characters and actors have to be older to have the experience to truly understand. Until you lived a little life, there is no way you can bring that kind of wisdom to the table. It would be very easy to bring beef cake and bikini’s to the table; that is what most shows are doing these days. But OHB is swimming in the deep end of the pool. The characters have issues.
